Setting the Angel of Life (who is mostly monochrome) in the middle of a lifeless field of desolation is not a recipe for outstanding colors. Yet, I don't think that matters. Color is often subtle and artistic interpretation gives me the freedom to exaggerate the experience of it. In this painting, I wanted to include bands of greens, blues, yellows and reds wherever I could find a place for them, regardless of the logic. As I played with my options, I chose to apply color wherever and however it felt right. No reason to overthink it.
Looking back over the painting in this state, I'm internally chiding myself a little. I really prefer to keep things more solid than this at this phase. Avoiding the rigors of my process are almost always a bad idea. Thankfully, I knew that I was making a risky choice when I was making it, so I was careful to steer this piece toward completion rather than continue to let it spiral off into obscurity.
