Dumah - History Lesson

I'm working on a new illustration for Dumah, Angel of Dreams this month.  Before I start posting the progress so far, I wanted to share something older first.

This is a painting from around 2007-2008. Just around the time where I was seeking out my first jobs as a professional artist. I had been gaining attention for Angelarium at the time and I wanted to start adding new Angels to the roster. This one never quite made it out of the gate.

I started working on a version of it in March '07 and then stopped at this point sometime around December '08.

One of the many contrasts between 23 year old me, versus 35 year old me is my ability to finish my work. Back in the day, it was impossible for me to tell if a painting had a clear path to completion. That lead to getting stuck constantly doing soft reboots on paintings I could never quite finish.

Never finishing Dumah always bugged me. So, back in 2016, thanks to Patreon I was able to complete an updated version of the concept. It's been a favorite of mine from the series ever since, but it's part of the shrinking number of Angels that have only one illustration depicting them on the website.

A decade of focused study really adds up, huh?

I hope you folks will like Dumah's newest depiction :) It's coming really soon.

Much love,

-Pete

Dumah is probably my favorite too. Something about the colors in that piece and the design of his head especially make my heart go aflutter. That's why I had you sketch him for me for the contest! Can't wait to see his next installment, and I might have to grab a print of him this time around too. Still beating myself up for missing the last one lol

What would you say were the key practices/influences that made the most impact in your design choices in transition from the old to the new?
