The Angel of the Deep is one of the few Angels I've painted that actually has some classical lore attached to him.
When the Book of Raziel was thrown into the oceans by jealous Angels, Rahab was tasked with bringing it back. Despite the fact that he knew it wouldn't redeem him, he did it anyway. His connection to Raziel's book feels important, so it's exciting to finally get to depict that.
I think of the Book of Raziel as being the field manual for existence. In addition to having all the factual knowledge in existence, I imagine reading it as also imparting a sort of deeper wisdom. The sort of wisdom that makes you do the right thing, even when you aren't rewarded for it. That willingness to keep faith, even in inescapable darkness is, feels like the highest form of virtue.
