This was as far as I took this painting digitally before transferring it down to a painting board. The goal was to try to answer a lot of the questions that were going to come up as I tried to paint it, before I committed any brush strokes.
The goal with the colors, was to break away from the Lament of Icarus painting and make something that incorporated much more of the palette from the original Sathariel piece. Not knowing much about paint mixing, I was hoping that if I resisted introducing too many colors at this step, that I would have a palette that was easy to reproduce. A lot of my choices for this piece were intended to shield myself from my own lack of expertise with oil painting.
Here's a shot of me getting the painting transferred on to the board. It sounds like a fancy process, but it's actually just me tracing the image on to a blank gesso board using a projector.
