It's not uncommon for me to peel back some progress on a painting to jump back off from an earlier state. It's one of my favorite freedoms afforded by working digitally. This might be one of the first times I've actually shown myself doing it. In the past, I've covered up this back and forth progress by being more selective in WHEN I reveal my process. I'm making a push to be less self-conscious about showing my creative hesitations.
The mountain in the background was actually in an early version of the painting but was removed between the two previous posts. I brought it back to help establish the relative scale of the scene and mix up the composition a little.
One of the main things I wanted to change from the last version was to reduce the total amount of clutter. There were a lot of rocks and debris that seemed to be adding very little to the mood of the piece. Opening up the space around Ananiel feels like it's helping to give this piece a better sense of isolation.
