I normally start with the background and work my way forwards. That's an easy way to make clear progress when you are trying to finish a clean painting.

For this piece, I wanted to make everything less clean. It's almost easier to do with physical paint, but I've been known to fake it in the past. It's something I've been wanting to do again for a while.

There is still a lot of elements that will get cleaned up, but you can see the more textural finish of the skin coming together. I think that's where I want to leave the majority of it. The trick is finding the edges and transitions that make the painting look intentional and representative, while intentionally roughing up everything else. A lot of work goes into making it look messy. In a lot of ways, it's harder than making it look clean.
