I've been holding off on posting the work in progress posts until I'm basically done with the paintings the last couple of months. That's been largely to do with a concern that I want each step to obviously lead into the next, regardless of whether that's how the process really went. Today, I'm working on breaking that habit. This is really where I am right now and I have very little confidence in what will or won't make it into the final. There is a decent chance I will change the structure the piece piece's values and reorient the composition. We'll find out together.
I really wanted to have 4 of the zodiac paintings facing straight on, 4 facing left and four facing right. This is the last of the center facing pieces. That should make the composition really easy because I can rely on a mostly symmetrical pattern. That means as long as I can determine the a flow for the motion through the painting, I'm effectively home free on designing the composition. Making it strictly triangular, with the lines of force leading upward towards the golden goat mask feels like a safe bet.
Once I'm done with these last couple pieces, I'm really thinking about mixing up the way I do compositions. But in the mean time, it's nice to be working in such a familiar format.
