Sandalphon - Concept Stage

One of my greatest fears is that I'm repeating myself too much with these pieces. I want to explore and grow in my artwork. The freedom that you patrons allow me is something I'm deeply proud of, but I seem to never stop worrying that I'm going to veer too far from the sorts of content that you support me for.

I've never painted children before, so this is going to be interesting. Sandalphon's proportions are similar to my 5 year old. Considering that I see my wife and kids more than anyone these days, it stands to reason that I should be drawing from the material around me.

Sandalphon is being referred to in Angelarium's fiction as the "Twin Angel". A singular being existing in two identical bodies. It's an archetype that runs very deep, so I'm excited to explore it.

This drawing is pretty rough still, so I'm sort of crossing my finger and hoping that I can find some interesting moments inside the structure of this piece. I'd prefer to have those moments already exist in the drawing, but everyone once in a while I decide to take the risky move of pushing forwards in hopes of finding them later.

I'm hoping to get the rest of this done this week, keep an eye out for updates as I keep pushing forwards.

Maybe, if you're worried about repeating yourself too much, try abandoning a humanoid-type form altogether for a few? For example: I was writing out a backstory for Chazaqiel, and in it she was originally a cloud, shot through with gold and the occasional lighting spark. The cloud also had wings, here and there, in no particular direction. The concept was of flight/change and stormy/sunny weather, since that was the knowledge she was responsible for (weather, etc). Then, when she fell, she became trapped in a humanoid form, wingless, and lost inside fog, unable to find her way out. Fitting. Anyway, since she turned into a humanoid shape when she fell, what if those who began as such dissolved? Lost their winged and armoured shapes, and only left with an amorphous mass of what they were, constantly changing and unable to resolve back into their normal state of grace. It's just an idea I had, and I don't know if it will be helpful in any way. Just thought I'd share in case it was. Excellent work as always!
