Hesed - WiP 2

I'm already getting close to finishing this one. The background has come together fast, thanks to the fact that it's fairly empty. I've got a lot of detail on the sliver of ground plane without spending very much time on it. It's something I'm going to do again because it instantly makes her feel huge. It's a goal I've had in the past, but studying Beksinski's paintings more closely has given me more insight into how to achieve the effect that I'm shooting for. The color palette is making me happy overall, but I'm a little lost on where to use the oranges vs cyans to create the most effective image here. I've gotten far enough ahead of the game where I'm going to let it stew for a bit so I can get a fresh look at it later. Next version will be the final, so you'll see that Jan 8th along with Eli's version, the PSD. Full res in the attachments if you want to check out the detail so far.

She's gorgeous, Pete! Of the latest crop of angels, this one seems to draw me in the most. Despite still being the same kind of creepy as the others, there's something welcoming about her/him with the soft smile and the gentle hands. Fitting for Hesed (Chesed?), an emanation of mercy, or I imagine your reinterpretation here telling your own story. I think you're right about the relatively empty picture plane lending to a grandiose sense of scale. Though I think there's a danger there also of the compositions becoming repetitive unless you continue to include more narrative elements (such as the globe embraced in the arms) and vary up the color palettes even more than you have already. I know that has to be tricky, since it seems you're keeping their palettes very low key. As for the orange and cyan, it feels to me like you're doing a good job pushing the saturation of the cyan towards the horizontal focus of the piece that crosses where the clouds are most prominent in the background. It has a way of looping the viewer's eye into the background and up into the hands and face. I figured I'd point that out just in case you were doing this subconsciously.

Looking good and I love the grand sense of scale here. I do feel like parts get lost in the background - particularly the shawl on her left-hand side near the knee. That said, I can't wait to see the final version.
