a centerpiece

the hashira (vertical post) in my studio is tucked away under the stairs, next to where i have folks hang their jackets and take off their shoes. although you don't see it here, there's a big mirror to the right and often when i take photos, you can see my bike and my photo equipment in the reflection.

i won't pretend to be particularly knowledgable on Japanese architecture, or the history of the hashira used in the context of Shibari, but my understanding is that the hashira is a structural post in the center of the house or the room. to tie someone to it is to make them the centerpiece of your home; to put them on display, as a household object. in my studio, it may not be perfectly centered in the space, but being amongst jackets and shoes and crates and gear wedged under the stairs feels in proper hashira spirit--just another household object hung up neatly.

since this tie, i've learned many many new skills related to hashira. the long bight on kitten's sternum drives me bonkers, so does the join on her right leg, her knees are uneven in the third photo. sometimes i hesitate to post and point out imperfections and mistakes and messies (more on that later), but its so rewarding to see my technique and intention to detail improve over time.
