The sword clash video reminds me, have you ever played the Play Station 2 game Way of the Samurai? They do a mechanic where sword clashes happen, and the player can press a directional button to break the clash and execute a technique. There were a bunch of sequels, but I only ever played the first one. Now that you've grown out of your katana contrarian phase, there are some things about the game that I think you might like. To this day, when I see HEMA guards, I often think that they remind me of guards in Way of the Samurai. Might be interesting to compare. Way of the Samurai is kind of RPG-like, so the way it works is that you find different swords and when you have one equipped, your character uses a particular guard. So like if you have a Wrath Guard sword, your character will always fight from Wrath Guard. As you get further through the game, you can also pick up zanier weapons like double bladed swords or bowling ball hands. Although to be honest, I'm just realizing it's been literally decades since I played Way of the Samurai, I don't know if I'm remembering anything correctly.
