I just watched Your ugliest guns(pre 1900). Just a short note. On most single shot military pistols the "pommel" was mostly more used than it was fired. There are even a bunch of manuals around showing, how to use your handgun as a club. Please, remember how unreliable they were. Priming powder falling off the pan, flints splinter and so on. Further You had anyway only one shot . . . but still a nice heavy blunt object, to bring peace to Your enemies. Further they were used to parry. There are a lot of depictions, showing fighters, holding a sword, or similar , in the right and a pistol, by the barrel in the left.
