They also did a lot of set up with Instagram before the show started, we were led to believe that that crew of assholes was the new crew. We met Zoe end of S4, I think it was... Hannah.... saw her on the park bench S1 E1 opened on, making out with her boyfriend and Hannah recognized her as Kiki's sister, we also overheard phone conversations between Kiki and Zoe in a previous season where Zoe was calling her to insist she came home ot help with her mother. I don;t think they mentioned Nora in previous seasons, but the Instagrams of all of these characters was really active in the last month or so setting up this story

As someone who has a history of living with someone who was an alcoholic, I picked up on that storyline right away, whoever wrote this knew what they were doing. The instant paranoia when she got a voice text from her mom, she left class to check it, assuming it was some hectic nonsense, the fact she broke up with Constatin because it was too complex... I'm guessing she means her life is too complex, the fact two of her sisters have run off, I'm surprised Kiki wasn;t the one to take the lead, I think it usually is the oldest. It surprises me that it's the youngest who is still trying with her mother. Zoe is seldom seen without a bottle of alcohol in her hand, her (or rather Zoe's) friendgroup is nothing bunch a bunch of party-kids, her doing all of the housework, her sisters organizing the birthday party, then she goes on a bottle hunt through the house, looking in all of the places closet alcoholics hide thir bottles, she also lied about their location so the mom wouldn;t join, I'm guessing it was to avoid potential drama. It's very well written.
