Added 2025-01-08 16:11:25 +0000 UTCThis week's assignment was to write a short piece using the Aeolian scale mixed with Harmonic Minor, but also include Dorian or Phrygian (or both!) This will result in a minor key composition with at least 9 notes, but possibly 10.
Here's my submission. It's in Am, just a melody and chords on piano. The progression is as follows:
Am - - Em - - F - G - Am - -
D - - F - E - Am - Bb - Am
As numerals:
i - - v - - bVI - bVII - i - -
IV - -bVI - V - i - bII -i
It starts in A Aeolian, then the D chord (IV) from A Dorian introduces the natural 6th into the mix. The E chord raises the b7 to natural 7 and introduces Harmonic Minor. A surprising Bb chord (bII) brings a bit of Phrygian to the party, before finally resolving.
Try to submit your piece before Sunday night (Jan 12th), which will give me a chance to judge them on camera before the following day's lesson. If you're late to submitting your file, that's fine too! I just won't be able to film my feedback.
ADVICE:
You all did amazing last week! I think one of the only "problems" I heard from more than one submission was a lack of tonal center. You need to make an effort to reinforce your tonic chord (in this case, it'll be our minor i chord) and make it really feel like home base. In the minor key, if you spend too long on bIII, then it'll take over command of your key and i will no longer feel like the tonic. So in Am for example, spending too much time on C will make it feel like C and not Am. Keep that in mind as you compose this week - modal mixture is all about a consistent and static and unchanging tonal HOME. What changes is the notes SURROUNDING that home. Good luck!!!

My main objective this week was to maintain C as my tonal centre, whilst including the prescribed modal mix in moderation, for the desired element of surprise.

2025-01-12 10:39:00 +0000 UTCThis is not going to be near as finished or as full as many of y'all's. I'm new to not only writing but recording. My double learning curve is slowing me down a lot, but I'm hanging in there. This is pretty basic with just guitar cord forms and a bass tossing out roots. There's a midi piano in there but it was off about an eighth notes worth and I can't figure out why, so I dropped the volume on it way down. I'm hoping that my math was correct on using the modal and Harmonic chords. I already had to start over once because I used a wrong chord and the right chord just wouldn't work at all with the progression I had written. I took a bold chance and used not 1 but 2 dim chords. Dim chords always give songs a 50s feel to me. Looking back, I wish I would have split them up, but too late now. Pretty straight forward. In the key of Em. Starts with a vamp 3x through the standard i-VI-iv-v to establish tonal center and then do Dorian -> Phrygian -> Minor -> Harmonic Minor then finish with an Authentic Cadence to establish it back in Em. From A Saucerful Of Secrets, their first album with David Gilmour. Although they “cheat” and do the same riff in the subdominant phrygian. But maybe you could see it (the b2) as the b5 of the tonic. Or is that stretching it a bit and it should be considered a key change? Your favourite melody rhythm sounds like a tango to me. Have you got latino roots? ✌️✌️

The opening hopefully establishes that. Then, by the third bar I add the E major chord from the B Dorian mode, followed by the F#7 of B Harmonic Minor. In the next bar, there is an added Am/C chord, borrowed from B Phrygian — I also pedal on the C note there to hopefully make Phrygian more clear. Prior to resolving on Bm/F#, I lead into that final chord with the F#7 again from B Harmonic Minor. Bm/F# Em/G F#m7 Em Bm/F G Em/G F#m7 Bm G E/G# F#7 Bm Bm Am/C Bm Bm G A Bm Bm D A F#m F#7 Bm/F# Writing this on acoustic felt simple enough, but final result became a bit sloppy as I’m not too good at recording or working with DAWs yet. I did end up using all 10 notes though, to my own surprise! The chords are as follows. Em(add9) -- D -- Csus2 -- B7 (x2) Em - G - F - Em (x3) Em -- C -- G -- D Em -- F -- F#m -- Bm - B Em - G - F - B Or in roman numerals: i -- bVII -- bVI -- V (x2) i - bIII - bII - i (x3) i -- bVI -- bIII -- bVII i -- bII -- ii -- v - V i - bIII - bII - V Mixing it all together in the arpeggio section towards the end gave me a nice chromatic line of B>C>C#>D>D#>E, for some rising tension. At least until I ran out of frets. :)

Just a piece on the guitar, recorded on my phone (not the best quality but hopefully it will suffice). The progression has a tonal centre of Am and goes something like this: Am - Em - Dm - Am x2 (first with A pedal bass note, second time with A, E, D basses) Moves to: Bbmaj7 - Am - Bbmaj7 - Bdim - C7 Then Am - Em - Dm - Am - Em - D - then I'm not sure what the chords are but they are based of Bb, first with a G bass, then Bb bass. I think I've covered all points of the assignment. This week I’ve dusted off the seven string which happens to be tuned to Bb so the key is Bb minor for maximum chuggability. I also wanted to take the challenge of doing all three modes plus harmonic minor just because I’ve not actively tried it before. Link: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/hilphvqs7lmcyubboazw3/Modal-Mixture-Week-2.mp3?rlkey=a87i2odpci0ya3lv6ygny5gim&st=r1guqx3y&dl=0 The chords are (if you take the riff section as straight Bbm) Bbm - Bbm - Bbm - Gb Cb Bbm - Bbm - Bbm - F (Bbm(add#13) - Bbm7) x2 Ab(add9) - Ab(add9) Bbm - Gb - Cb As numerals: i - i - i - bVI - bII i - i - i - V i - i - i - i - bVII - bVII i - bVI - bII The riff uses exclusively notes from Bb Phrygian then when the synth part starts it flip flops between Aeolian and Phrygian by sneaking in a C while the guitar chugs away on the low Bb. Then moving to the V chord for a little harmonic minor run down. The next section introduces the natural 6 to the tonic chord for some gentler dorian vibes and then it’s backed up by a heavier section where I’m still droning the Bb (handy open string available!) over the top of the next chords to anchor that tonal centre while shifting into aeolian/phrygian again. Really enjoyed this one!

The idea was to start with mellow/suspenseful Phrygian, then build up to more of a rock jam with the clean guitar arpeggiating the chords combined with distorted power chords from the other guitar. I put a melody/lead over it to try to highlight the mode changes as well as a very simple bass line to make it sound a little more full. I'm looking forward to listening to everyone's submissions!
