Lucy referring to the power tripping dads by asking "what if they were Eric Cartman" and then not following up with the most enthusiastic "respect my authoritah" she could muster was either an amazing show of self restraint, or highly deliberate torment of your audience. I can't figure out which.

Nobody knows why this ad has come up. Has anyone tried...clicking on it? My guess is to sell bogus meds to people. Scamwatch?

Also dollars to donuts many of those free-time-having dads are landlords or somesuch

Almost anything in American policing that seems weird or confusing is an attempt to circumvent the 4th Amendment in the Bill of Rights by inventing "probable cause" to make a search or arrest without a warrant from a judge. In the case of field sobriety tests, it's probably mostly absurd to not just be able to mandate a breath test, but on the other hand considering how discriminatory they tend to be in pulling people over in the first place, perhaps it's a good idea to keep some extra layers of protection in place. I don't know. And for the earlier question, I think the adult safety checks to volunteer at schools vary by state but they definitely have them in my state. Unclear how much good they do but they for sure got too panicked about stranger danger abduction years ago not to have some kind of checks in most places.

You summoned the ADHD/hypersexuality ad to my computer! I had never seen it before, and then it pounced at me when I was checking baseball scores this evening

It’s not expressly stated in the article, but i think the Eric Squad is a reaction to school bomb threats, not shootings. That’s the moral panic du jour. But bomb threats have been around forever, my high school got evacuated every time we had exam week. As long as teens without impulse control exist, the threats will come in.

In answer to Lucy's question about "American pedo panic", I'm pretty sure it's almost entirely something to use cynically against LGBT people. There are multiple cars in my area with big "SHOOT YOUR LOCAL PEDOPHILE" decals with a silhouette of a vigilante execution on them and every time I pass one I think "they probably aren't thinking of Catholic priests"

Frenzal Rhomb. . . Now that’s a name I haven’t heard in a long time. . .
