When I used to work at a public school in the U.S.A, we had to go on lockdown once due to a number of inmates escaping from a prisoner transport bus that was driving past us, and another time due to an armed robbery at a convince store across the street from my school. We were never under any real threat, but it was wild learning about why the lockdown was called afterwards. I don't know how it is for every school district, but for mine at least, the policy is not to say why we are going into lockdown, when a lockdown is called.
