Yeah that's definitely caused by the thinner: it's a complex mix of different components that can react in different ways with different brands of pain (and there's also a bit of retarder inside). If the concentration of thinner it's too high it can turn tacky. You can cut it with some extra water (I like distilled water for irons) or alcohol to keep the same consistency without unwanted effects
