You could be forgiven for thinking that after two decades of war, King Charles XII would be ready to throw in the towel. As we see in this episode, he wasn't just unready for this, he was also thinking bigger than ever before. A counter-attack against the distracted and divided anti-Swedish league was his plan for 1718, and it wasn't as crazy as it sounds.
What was crazy was Charles' unwillingness to compromise. Despite his delegate, von Goertz, having several diplomatic options, including a rising anti-Russian league which bound themselves to a treaty of Vienna, his King could not countenance compromise, under ANY circumstances. Then, at the critical moment, disaster struck, as a major player abruptly left the scene. With intrigue, scheming and diplomacy galore, it must be Poland Is Not Yet Lost time!
