This is a good example of how complementary colors can give a lot of energy to paintings. Clashing two complementaries (orange vs blue) in such a dramatic way always gives interesting results.
Another concept in use here is the warm and saturated oranges reacting to the cold less satured blue shades.
In this example the use of a third color, green, is not very apparent but I used it in three ways:
1. Can be seen on the male pupils to attract attention to them.
2. I used the green in the shadows, (principally nature’s shadows) to tone down other colors and give a more interesting look, like in the log, pines.
3. Another place where is more apparent is on the edge of the light in the horizon and the textures in the sky.
