This was an interesting picture, Its a dark setting and I needed to get the attention to these two and make the background very quiet. I used two sources of light: imagined a warm light from the screen (in a sunlight scene maybe) and a blue light cast from the projector, giving a rim light around their heads.
st step: Lineart. Most of my poses are done from memory, specially in the sketching phase, I then consult references for some parts like hands, shadow, etc when needed. In this case was different. I needed to use a 3D model app for the first time since I found the interaction between the models a little hard to get right.
nd step: Flat colors base. I change hues later with SAI filters. the focus here is to make the shape of each color very nicely delineated since I use them as masks latter, sometimes any imperfection can be very visible so better take extra time in this step (same reason I don't like autofill tools).
rd step: Start to apply volume with a very basic shadow and light layer, just to get the general idea of temperature and direction of light.
th step: I changed the black values to get a closer dark room mood with very dark corners with no light at all. Also with the color picker I used the shadow and light base colors/values to get the correct shapes of the bodies and clothes.
th step: Background light from the projector is added. Also added another layer with more intense light and shadow. With this I finish the painting in SAI.
th step. Color correction and cleaning in Photoshop. Mainly changed dark-light levels, and put a cooling photo filter to get a more intense and richer blues and blacks.
