Asked Jan Sobieski's mother Zofia in 1648, when Jan and his brother Marek returned to the fortress town of Zamosc, near their place of birth, to help deal with the emerging Cossack threat under Bogdan Khmelnitsky.
Jan Sobieski could not have known it yet, but he was about to embark upon the first of a series of campaigns which would exhaust his homeland, imbue him with invaluable military experience and, in time, cement his legend.
