Did you know the first automatic doors were actually invented in ancient Greece? I guess some guy named Heron rigged up a thing where you light a fire that would heat up the air in a thing with water in it. The pressure would then force the water into another thing that was attached to a pulley system for the door. Pretty neat!
Though I dunno how “automatic” I’d call that door. I feel like the time and energy it takes to start a fire has a much higher threshold than what it takes to open the vast majority of doors “unassisted”. Now, I’m sure whatever door they used this on was really big and impressive. But they could have just put a regular door there instead. And I bet there was also a regular door around the back. I find it hard to believe that the custodial staff was pulling out flint and steel every time they had to change a mop head. They had mops. Right? This didn’t make automatic doors before mops! Right?!
Of course, all this complaining about Heron’s inefficiency is coming from someone who built a miniature walk-in freezer for the background of a single comic instead of simply drawing it just because it “would look cool”. So, I guess we’re not so different after all, Heron. And yeah, your overly complicated door is pretty cool.
