Eat the Rich and More — Eternal Beach City

This is actually based (and when I say “based” I mean “almost verbatim transcript”) on a conversation between me and a good friend and fellow cartoonist. And when I say “good friend”, I mean we’ve been friends for many years. Not that calling your friend “trailer trash” makes you particularly “good”.

I really do have a pathological dislike for most anyone even moderately rich. I carve out an exception for writers, artists and other creatives. Even if I don’t like your work, you can’t make something popular enough to get you rich if you don’t at least work hard and smart. And I have to at least respect that. Plus, creatives tend (at least more than neurotypicals) to maintain a healthy respect for the lower classes and their humanity, even after getting rich.

Not 100% sure why. I feel it’s either because we maintain a relationship with the full spectrum of humanity, due to the fact that our job is dependent on pleasing and understanding an audience from all walks of life, or maybe we’re just not held back by making excuses for the guilt most rich people should feel. The people who achieved their newfound comfort through the exploitation of others in one form or another. If they can’t convince themselves they’re better than the people struggling to eat and pay rent, they’d have to consider that, maybe, they don’t really deserve what they have.

At the heart of it though, I can just tell from how they act and look at me that they think they’re better than me, and that fills me with rage. Respect is very important to me. Oh!
