Would love to see a bonus episode where Elliot follows one of Kel's tutorials and Kel participates in a design chef challenge (I vote season 4) and they share results

this was also very drawn out lol, it’s just nice talking to other artists!! Truly the biggest benefit of art school imo, I miss it dearly 🥲

Nooooo omg I love this. I definitely agree that RISD leans towards fine art over commercial, and everything you said about the value of industry connections and professors etc. I think what gets me as a local in PVD in the shadow of RISD is that almost every one of my professors at ✨state art school✨ either went to RISD or taught the exact same classes at RISD as they did at my school, except you (I) obviously don’t get the name recognition. That was always wild to me, given that I was getting a near indistinguishable education at an insane fraction of the price. Same professors, same syllabus etc. I actually ended up in graphic design (and printmaking 🥲) because the only school in my area that offered illustration was RISD and I very much could not afford it. At the end of the day, I’m super grateful because I love design more than pretty much anything, but all of that is definitely something I think about all the time. No shade at all and thank you for such a thoughtful reply. I definitely understand the benefits and everything you said, I took invaluable classes at RISD when I was in high school, but like I said- I’m always curious about outsider perspectives because not everyone has access or proximity to school’s like RISD and SCAD 🥲

Hannah Jayne

I hope this wasn't too much info lol, I just saw my school mentioned and was like "omg!"

I go to SCAD (currently a junior working on my bfa in illustration and minoring in graphic design) and from what I've heard, RISD tends to lean more towards the fine art end of the scale than commercial. Speaking from my experience, SCAD has a HUGE range of programs so you can go as fine art or as commercial as you want, but the institution itself sucks. They're greedy, displace Savannah locals, and overadmit freshmen to milk as much money as they can before they decide to drop out. What sucks is that a lot of schools are like this, public or private, so it's very difficult to find any academic institutions that conduct themselves ethically. The benefit of going to art school is connections and having the dedicated classes, assignments, and time to study and hone your craft. Since I never took art in k-12, that was super valuable for me, but having industry connections and professors that have worked within their respective industries is soooooooo helpful.

seconding this as a topic

My vote is Elliot!

Curious how you guys approach asset management? I find myself downloading and collecting graphics, textures, etc. just cause they are cool and MAYBE I’ll use it someday. But at the time I can’t be bothered to catalogue or save it in a helpful way. Which of course I regret later when I’m looking for something!

nicolesaidwhoa

Me too, I feel like if I'm not at work I am putting all of my energy into catching up with laundry or cleaning and when im not doing that I have no energy for anything.

Lovefromrobs

I second this! I struggle SO much with procrastination. I desperately want to improve as a professional and creative, but when I get home at the end of a long day at my boring office job I end up rotting on the couch watching Love Island despite desperately wanting to design, but I just CANNOT get myself to.

Thoughts on big name design schools (RISD, SCAD etc)? I was born, raised, and now work in Providence where RISD is, but I went to state college for design lol. I could probably write a novel about it, but I’m always curious about outsider perspectives.

Hannah Jayne

I vote elliot post

George

I’d like to hear both of ur thoughts on imposter syndrome 😵‍💫

Anything adhd is great as undiagnosed adhder like myself. Also any cool apps or programs that you guys use for your work/or just in general besides the obvious adobe suite etc? Going against the grain gotta be a Kel post I think

Favourite fine artists? Or design books? 🐛

2 Questions. (Greedy thymes) - number 2 if it had to be one... 1. From your experience when speaking with other designers, are they open to talk shop about their rates? 2. Twilight zone - You wake up and you're an accountant (Peace and love to the accountants; just using it as an example.) Same age, same time and you still retain the skills and knowledge about your industry. Do you think you can start over, building an audience/client base back to what it is now, in todays world? Twilight twist - Your workplace is making you build their design system with the marketing department - 3 year commitment. Thank you. (Guess would be: Elliot)

Post written by Elliot?

Lunzer

Do you guys have a favorite album cover art of all time?

Lunzer

How do each of you approach your own personal brand/visual identity? You both have such uniquely recognizable styles and I'm curious if it's something that's intentionally curated/maintained or if it's something that you just sort of noticed being there one day—or maybe it's somewhere in between? I'd love to hear about it! (also my gut says this post is a Kel Original™)

ryanhentzen

Any tips you have for procrastination with adhd? I haven't been able to get back into design since graduating and love any advice from fellow neurodivergents
