SARS was the original coronavirus, which appeared in china in 2002 and was successfully suppressed. COVID is actually called SARS-CoV-2, both are coronaviruses, named after the crown of spike proteins that bind to the cell. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/your-health/about-covid-19.html

it kind of depends on the person or community if they find it offensive, but i think it often is seen as offensive, because indians was a misnomer by the european colonizers/settlers coming in the 15th century because they didnt know the americas existed so literally assumed they had gone around the world to asia (because they were hoping to find a new trade route other than going down around africa and up again to asia), so assumed the people there were in fact asian indians. depending on where you are i think they prefer terms like indigenous americans, aboriginal (americans), native americans, first peoples. etc. etc. also fyi SARS was a kind of coronavirus that they thought might potentially turn into a pandemic. and historically american settlers had infected blankets with smallpox to kill off the native population. so this is a parody of that.

If you want to see Gerald at his finest you need to watch season 20 (in order). Also unrelated, but I still really want to see you react to Follow that Egg for peak Mrs. Garrison insanity.

SARS was basically the far less severe predecessor to Covid-19 in 2002 or so. I think there were thousands of cases and hundreds of deaths, so again far less devastating than 2020. As Alex said, he won a guest role on South Park at a charity auction.

When Columbus reached the America's he was actually searching for a shorter route west to India/Asia. So the natives where referred to as Indians because at least initially they were assumed to be the same as people from India. The name pretty much stuck. So some deem it as offensive, because centuries later we should know that the indigenous peoples of the Americas are not actually Indian (as in from India). I do love what they do here with the term though, most especially the Randy line in the car. "Don't you compare us to those cold-hearted, money-grubbing, evil stinky Indians! ....I'm sorry, Native Americans." He's more concerned about the offensive nature of the word "Indian(s)" than by the content of the rest of the phrase. It's okay to hurl all sorts of other insults, but the world Indian is problematic. You can replace Indian with any other in a long list of questionable slurs. People are often more offended by the choice of word, than by the content of what is said. Say something sympathetic to the struggles of colored people (instead of people of color), or disabled (instead of differently abled), etc., and some segment of people are going to get offended by using the wrong term.

The episode is basically a flip of what the original white Americans did to the Native Americans in the 1700s-1800s, giving them blankets infected with smallpox so that Manifest Destiny wouldn’t be interrupted
