This one was a challenge to make, and I took many gambles but I don't think they really worked. In the end, I don't like this piece, but it was a fun experiment!
The idea was to draw Geordi and Data dancing around. At first, the "grid" I'd drawn out was 2x2, which I realised was absurd. More! So, 3x3 instead. This proved to be kinda challenging cause drawing so small was hard for me after having gotten used to bigger canvases(this was A4, so each character is about 4cm in height)
I searched aroung google for fun dancing references and adjusted a bit to avoid stiffness often inherent in stock photos. Then I chose more free-flowing poses for the corners, To avoid it looking cramped, and create a more explosive effect. I'm particularly in love with the Enterprise and rainbow trails haha, so of course, A lot of rainbows had to be incorporated- then, I thought, why not try to make this truly cluttered, but still balanced? So, I tried placing out falling stars. At last, I chose to adorn two diagonal corners with portraits. And I thought, isn't it cute if it said men of the future? Haha... Oh man, it ended extremely cluttered. But I thought: Maybe I can make it work! I don't dislike the lineart. And I began coloring- first, start with the background, cause then it's easier to pick out how the people will pop aganst it. Then, I colored area after area... and in the end, I tried to decide between a black and white frame. Thinking back on it, I like a white frame better, but at the time, I decided to give black a go. In the end, I really do dislike this piece, though I enjoy the concept! But all in all, it was a fun experiment.
I am very clumsy, and I can never quite stop my hands from twitching or shaking due to various problems, so a lot of the times I spill water, ink, or simply color outside the lines. In the end, I don't think those kinds of thing matter all that much compared to the finished feel of a piece... at least, I hope!
2nd:
Here I just wanted to draw Geordi and Data sitting down for a lil fun sketch, that's all. But it got a bit out of hand! I thought, aww wouldn't it be fun if they were in astronaut suits? Then I thought what if they're on the moon! On their honeymoon :D and so it just went on, and I added spot. I decided that once again... I wanted a gay enterprise trail. And I wanted flags on their uniforms! So, Geordi gets the Somali, gay pride, trans and autism flags! Data gets the gay pride one. I wanted to paint a nationality flag for him too, but Dr. Soong is from this obscure planet in star trek that doesn't have a flag! So I just painted a lil insignia of the planet... Well, then coloring I went about it the same way, just backgrounds first, then people. When it came to the space suits I came into a conondrum- I really wanted them both gold as in their uniform, but it was too yellow in the middle and dull, so I decided to add more red to data's in particular. Looking back, I wish I'd added green, too! In the end, I think it ended up okay... Though, I will see if I can take a better picture of it tomorrow in the sun since my lights aren't optimal for photographing. I still have to buy a scanner, haha...
anyway, I hope you are all staying safe, and at good health! Take care of yourselves this weekend. Love, Jay.
