Hi Barbara! I'm only guessing here, but I think the 24-string lyres might have higher strings closer to resemble a harp since they usually have more strings. However, there are also 24-string lyres with lower notes closer, although those are less common. Similarly, there are 16-string lyres strung both ways as well. It comes down to individual designs and options for customers. I haven’t played a 24-string before, and yes, the 16-string lyres are my fave! :D
