2021-08-02 11:13:52 +0000 UTCThis is one of my favorites, for a variety of reasons up to and including the discussion questions, which just made me laugh reading them again. I never really like to invoke comparisons to other authors (in the same way I hate when, say, NBA prospects get comps that are never really accurate) but the "glimpses of adult reality filtered entirely through a kid's perspective" reminded me of a few excellent Richard Russo stories. Something else I hate (not sure why a story I like is leading me to bring up multiple things I don't like to do): the term literary fiction. But this, to me, feels like one of the Bedtime Stories that could slide into a quarterly lit mag filled with much drier material and be a very pleasant surprise to anyone reading that kind of publication as a chore (which tends to be my experience, though obviously there are exceptions.)
