Possible changes to the Patreon pay model
Added 2017-12-07 22:04:44 +0000 UTCHello my DEVGRU operators. Recently Patreon pushed out a new payment model to get more money into the hands of your intrepid podcasters. Initially, I was pretty damn excited. But unfortunately this wasn't Patreon being suddenly altruistic. No, that's not good Capitalism. Instead, they decided that you, the patreons, should pay more.
Every month when we get the payouts, Patreon takes a little for themselves for what they do, and a little for a processing fee. In all, we were getting about 90% of what you see on our front page. To me, that's not too bad. Considering how easy it is for me to contact you all through posts like this, or give you the bonus podcasts, I was fine with this. It's insane to me that anyone pays for the drunk ramblings of the two dumb asses who run this thing.
BUT, now instead of taking the money from me, which if you didn't have a Patreon of your own set up to make money you probably didn't even know about, they're taking it from you. Your $5 pledge (or however much you choose to give us) will now be $5+. It seems they wanted to do this because you, the money giver, would be just APPALLED that they were taking away so much in fees. And therefore would love to give more money.
It's not much. fifty more cents a month for the $5 people. 37 cents for the one dollar people. It's not breaking your bank. Unless it is. As someone who's had to scrape and live out of old cans of vegetables to get to the next payday, I know that five bucks can be a lot. Hell, it's crazy to me that anyone gives us money, but we appreciate the hell out of it and are happy to pay the fees that come with that.
So we will be discussing what to do if this goes through. I don't want to force everyone to move to some other payment platform, especially when I know many of you, like us, give to multiple patreons. More than likely, we'll just reduce the price of the content to four dollars. If you want to keep paying the full five, we will love you to death, but if you want to drop down to four to save yourself the money, we still love you to death.
No word on if Patreon is going to force this through yet and it's not slated until later this month. There's a lot of pushback against this, and with luck they will realize that this is a mistake and leave things they way they are. Just wanted to let you know where we stand. We stand with you.
