All Too Human: Christian's Struggle with Meth, Alcohol, & Incarceration

In this fourth edition of our All Too Human interview series, Breht and Dave welcome their old friend from high school, Christian, into the Shoeless Shed to have an honest conversation about his struggles with alcoholism, methamphetamines, and incarceration. This is the first time Breht and Christian have seen each other in 15 years!

With these All Too Human interviews, we aim to highlight and destigmatize the mental health and addiction struggles of regular working class people in hopes that we can provide insight into this type of human suffering, help others who struggle with similar things feel less alone, and deepen our understanding of the modern human condition.

Outro music: "Learning to Change" by Tidda (Christian)

I really, really appreciate your guys' candor about all of this— huge props to Christian for being willing to talk about it all. I'm reevaluating my relationship with substance use right now and have really been through it in the past; I had a completely ridiculous adderall addiction in my early 20s and circled the drain of the kind of psychosis Christian talks about. I remember being convinced my shoulder implant broke, hadn't slept in 3 or 4 days, and was sitting in the doctor's office waiting while the sound of the fan in the corner started turning into a metal guitar riff. Wasn't even my rock bottom, there were visuals at other points. My drinking and weed dependence were out of control at other still. Hearing friends be able to be vulnerable about it and joke around chips away at the shame that keeps the cycle going.

the psychosis is really hard to watch, sometimes horrifying, but hearing the horror christian described is making me relive some memories from my brothers' side of it. thanks for this episode

thank you guys for this. my older brothers are a few years younger than you and both of em went through opiate and meth addiction- my oldest is currently in jail for at least the next year cuz he hasn't ever been able to break that cycle. i only made it about an hour into the episode so far cuz it's bringing up a lot of memories/making me think about a lot of years lost, but I just wanted to say thanks. it's like being able to listen in on a conversation I wish I could have with my brother
