I’m sharing my third iteration of a physical modeling piano preset for Bitwig Studio, which is available for free download in the description below. I’ve made some improvements since my earlier versions, and I want to show you how it sounds and how it works.
Basic Setup:
This is a simple physical modeling piano built using comp filters in Bitwig.
The sound starts with a noise burst, which is filtered and passed through a series of filters and modulation.
Physical Modeling Process:
It uses comp filters to simulate the vibration of multiple piano strings.
A dry signal is blended in to make the sound more harmonic and less dissonant.
The sound of mechanical noises from a real piano is added using samples from my friend Skyance.
The mechanic knob allows you to control these noises, adding a realistic touch.
Customizable Controls:
Age Knob: Detunes the notes above and below C3, allowing you to add a slight detuning effect, giving the piano a more natural, imperfect tuning.
Harmonics Knob: Modulates the detuning of the strings to simulate strings that are slightly out of tune with each other.
Impulse Responses: Includes presets for different piano sounds, such as the Steinway D and other body formants for more realism.
Attic and Hall Effects: Convolution reverb to simulate different environments like a wooden attic or a cathedral, enhancing the spatial depth of the sound.
Free Download:
You can download this preset for free, no need to pay or subscribe to my Patreon (but you can if you want to!).
The preset is compatible with Bitwig Studio 5.3.2 and can be used to add a more organic piano sound to your tracks.
This version of the physical piano sounds better than my earlier attempts and might be useful for various music production projects. It’s still not 100% realistic, but I think it’s a solid improvement, and you can tweak it further to fit your needs.
Let me know what you think in the comments below, and feel free to try it out, tweak it, or send me your improved versions!
