Hey folks, welcome back! In this video, I want to show you Topos, a new saturation distortion plugin that just came out yesterday. It's developed by the same person who made VISCO, a spectral-based drum sampler I showed before. Topos offers some unique twists on the typical saturation and distortion effects, and I’m excited to give you a rundown of what I like, and some things I think could be improved.
Modules Overview:
Input Filter: Allows you to control low and high cuts, giving you detailed control over the frequency range you want to distort.
Amplifier Simulation: Offers various presets that simulate different amplifier characteristics. The most interesting feature here is the topological view that lets you mix distortion presets, creating your own custom distortion curves.
Saturation Control:
You can scale the transfer curve to make the saturation more subtle, adjusting the distortion to fit the track perfectly.
Auto Gain is included to compensate for distortion, ensuring your volume remains consistent.
Speaker Simulation:
Unlike impulse response-based simulations, the speaker simulation is a real-time filter, allowing you to tweak settings for more dynamic control over your sound.
Filter Curves: You can modify these curves to shape your sound, adding textures like those from a smartphone, laptop, or other devices.
Output Section:
Flux Dynamics: This feature modulates the amplifier and speaker settings, adding movement to the sound by introducing random modulation or chaos.
Wet Mix: This allows you to blend between the processed and original sound, though it’s not entirely clear whether it’s a true blend or just a volume adjustment.
Downsides:
I find the interface a bit annoying because the plugin switches views when you adjust certain knobs, making it harder to focus on the settings.
The spectrum analyzers don't provide a lot of useful information, and could use some improvement for better clarity.
Pricing and Demo Version:
The full version costs $79 (regularly $99).
There’s also a Topos Play version (demo) that’s smaller in size and gives you access to the basic settings, perfect for testing out the sound.
Final Thoughts:
Overall, Topos is a great plugin with a lot of flexibility in terms of distortion and saturation. It sounds fantastic and is easy to use, though there’s room for improvement in terms of the interface.
It’s also very reasonably priced and offers a demo version, so it's worth giving it a try.
Topos is a solid saturation distortion plugin that stands out due to its real-time speaker simulation and custom distortion curves. It has a unique design, powerful features, and a very reasonable price tag. If you’re into experimenting with distortion and saturation, I recommend checking it out.
