Bitwig 5.3 is here!

Yesterday, I did a stream with Bitwig Studio 5.3, which just launched in its Beta 1 version. There are some exciting new features and updates to explore!

For starters, there are three new Drum Machine collections:

There’s also a brand-new Step Sequencer (Stepwise), which opens up lots of creative possibilities, and new Grid Modules, including a Pitch Shifter and a Frequency Shifter.

One of my favorite additions is the new Recorder, which can capture everything coming out of the Master Output and save it directly into your project. This makes it super easy to record sound experiments on the fly and drop them straight into the Sampler for further tweaking.

I showcased all of this during the livestream, so feel free to check it out!

The sequencer is nice, but by now there are so many great sequencers out there with amazing capabilities. The drums – okay, but why? But what really made my heart sink is that the developers have added audio recording from master before they even hinted at MIDI recording like FL Studio or Ableton have. It’s subjective, of course, but I’ve never ever needed to save a bit of audio, while almost every day I have a need to save some MIDI I’ve just played. Sure, there are plugins for that, but having to load a plugin on the right track really defeats the purpose of an always-on recording. Bitwig is so fantastic and so intuitive to use that a lot of time will have to pass before I say something unpleasant about it 😊 But the last update that took my breath away was the one in which they added Note Grid (and a bunch of new grid devices to go with it). That was two major versions ago. (Oh, I the “MSEGs everywhere” update was very welcome as well, though not so revolutionary after all.)
