Goddamn this was a particularly good one

I would largely agree with this critique. I was a vegetarian for over 8 years, and then I became a farmer for who raises animals on grass for meat for all the same reasons. I think that Max brings a very important analysis to the table about the need for animals in a truly sustainable agricultural system which mimics nature. That this requires a grass based system in appropriate locations, which builds soil carbon. And also that growing grains for the feeding of livestock is absurdly wasteful. But the tendency to conflate veganism as whole with its worst proponents is not entirely helpful. For those interested in the science of how ruminant animals are a key component of carbon sequestration, here is an article from the Land Stewardship Project which links to studies in two scientific journals. https://landstewardshipproject.org/posts/838

Solid show, but I confess I found the bit on veganism to be a bit off-putting. I'm a vegan myself, and I don't know a single vegan or vegetarian who claims that indigenous populations ought to be forced to practice a completely plant-based lifestyle, or even that veganism ought to be the law of the land. The jump from "If you think veganism is a moral imperative, you support clearing out the countryside and also are probably a Zionist" was really frustrating to hear amidst such an excellent discussion. No disrespect to Max, he does great work, I just felt the need to throw that out there in defense of a robust community of people who often are unfairly lumped in with monstrous orgs like PETA (which I do genuinely think is a meat and dairy industry op...but that's another conversation)
