Questions for the Q and A!

Hello,

Please use this thread to post any and all questions for our upcoming AMA episode!

We will answer as many as we can.

I am very grateful for the podcast. It has helped me understand a lot of things that seemed nebulous or confusing to me for a long time. I wonder about practical/concrete Leftist practices: What do the different Leftist ideologies have to say about someone trying to invest in another's business, for example? Is that made illegal? How is it enforced? Is it permissible if it is on the level on individual relationships, rather than hedge fund managers buying Wall Street stock from strangers and betting against the economy? That is just one example I have been wondering about, but I am interested in a broad range of how Leftism plays out on an everyday, political/economic level.

Hey, great points and insight there. Unfortunately we already recorded and released our Q and A episode BUT I am super interested in these ideas. I don't think I personally have the answers to the first question based on my ignorance of the relevant science, but I do think I could tackle, at least in part, the second question about what role they play in the political and social sphere and how technocratic neoliberalism does have some fascistic impulses within it. Either way, lets both try and remember to get this question onto the next Q and A. Id love to hear more of your thoughts on this too, as I am still learning. Thank you for the kind words about the show. I really appreciate all the support and encouragement, it means a lot. I do this show for comrades like you, and it always feels great to hear that its had a meaningful impact.

I hope you bear with me since this is my first time posting and I'm somewhat nervous. I've seen first hand how data analytics can be used to codify and structurally gloss over/codify the structural vectors of oppression in our society, through my work as a mathematician and data scientist. My question to you would be: what role, if any, do you see the information sciences playing in the construction of a radical society? I suppose I also have a follow up question: how might we best tackle the challenge of demystifying "big data" and the information sciences in the public sphere? I find that people have many misconceptions about algorithms and how they operate and categorize us; the fact that we're drowning in abstractions don't help nothing. Additionally, Cambridge Analytica / Amazon chicanery are often brought up as examples of the excesses of the tech industry, but I find that it sometimes misses the insidious assumptions that often lurk behind these algorithms in a general sense (the big one being that humans are too stupid to run a society, and so require the algorithms developed by some privileged assholes with coding competency to run it for them). I think there's something of a fascistic character present in these disciplines and within the way these algorithms are constructed; I am not sure how to convey that most clearly and would love advice on how I might best help articulate that. It would be one way to put these damned skills to use. Sorry for being a bit long winded. I love your shows and you've really helped inspire a continued growth and transformation in me. Much love.
