It was Right

Anna exited the cafe, knowing Tyler was waiting in the car. The sunlight hit her face. Its rays carried on by cool summer breeze. Two steps out, She reached for her keys.

Then heard him.

"Anna?"

It was soft, gentle. A voice she could never forget.

She froze and turned.

And saw Nathan.

He looked different now. Covered in tattoos. Hair a little longer. Body more muscular. But it was the same kind and gentle eyes.

"Hey Nathan," she said, voice soft. The smile formed before she could stop it.

"Hey," he said, stepping forward. Arms half open. Hesitating. Anna stepped into them, and they held for a breath.

"You look good," he said.

"You do too."

Nathan looked over at the running Ford Bronco.

"How are things going with your guy?"

Anna smiled warmly.

"Very good. We’re in the city helping his cousin move."

"Oh yeah?! How’d that go?"

"Good! Her place is adorable. I love this area."

"Yeah," he smiled. "It’s got its charm."

"You live nearby?"

"Down the street. I come here all the time."

"No way. I love this place."

"I knew you'd like it! There’s a few I knew you’d like."

They laughed as they returned to the past.

Then went silent.

Nathan shifted. "There’s something I wanted to say. I know your guy’s right there and I’m not trying to mess anything up, I just—"

"It’s okay," Anna said. "What is it?"

"I never stopped loving you." His words rolled by deeply. The welling emotion pouring across his face.

"I left because it was right. And don't worry, I am moving on." He paused. "I just wish it could’ve been me."

She wiped a tear with a finger, then outstretched her arms.

They embraced.

"I love you," he said.

"I love you, too," she answered.

They pulled away from each other.

"You should go." He said.

"I know."

He smiled. Lips trembling.

"I’ll see ya."

She looked down and nodded slowly.

"Yeah."

She turned.

He watched.

She reached the car, hugged Tyler, and got in the car.

He watched her leave.

It was right.
