I don't think Piper knows what torrid means, either. This happened often when I was little: Kids would hear new words from grown ups, ask what they meant, and the grown ups would say "When you're older" or "Nevermind", but the kids would go around repeating them anyway. Also, I wonder if Piper is drawing from her own parents splitting up here.
