Today, after I post this, I'm gonna chill out, turn off my internet, and just be present. And then turn on my internet again in the evening. See how that goes. So here's today's #coronart.
#coronart day 10: Global.
Make art, support artists, from home!
Today I'd like to give a shout out to the mighty Jens K. Styve! I was 14 years when I first met Jens, and he was gathering underground comics talent in Bergen. For me, at that time, his fanzines came like a godsend. I was deep into superhero comics and the whole Image Comics style, and Jens drew in every way the opposite of everything I thought was "correct", but still his art undeniably ruled. So funny, so energetic. And while a few superhero artists like Mark Texeira, Jae Lee, and Sam Kieth had already showed me that you could draw well yet be expressive, Jens show me that you could draw "bad" and be even more awesome for it. Discovering his comics directly led to the type of broken line, expressive and energetic art I do today, and I'll carry his influence with me forever.
He left comics for a while, worked in advertising, taught himself all the technique you could want, yet still retained his energy. He even wrote a novel. And now he's back doing his comics strip Dunce, which is among the funniest new comic strips, and you can support on Patreon. https://www.patreon.com/dunce/
