Topic Zone Deluxe Edition Ft. Boghog! | Itagaki Legacy | Super Metroid Speedrunning | Timers in RPG | Gaming Community Concerns | Cabal Shooters | Rockstar Games

Hello Everyone!

Sorry for the delay in the usual upload pace, but this month's topic zone ended up turning into a double-sized episode and I am joined by Boghog to discuss the topics :-) I think it turned out really well. You all selected an awesome array of topics this month and we ended up waxing poetically on them for over three hours ha.

Also, since finishing my Ninja Gaiden 4 review, I have been ADDICTED to Ninja Gaiden 2 Master Ninja (Xbox Version, of course) difficulty and on average have been probably playing 5 hours a day for the past week lol. I'm really getting into it in the same way I did for Spikeout and Final Fight and I'm really excited to talk about the mode. After I finish the Ninja Gaiden 2 review the plan is to follow up with the Shinobi PS2 Patreon review, which I'm also very much looking forward to. Also the exclusive Gentry video should be ready to go after my NG2 review and I think i have something really interesting planned for that. :-)

For this episode, I think it's hard to actually summarize its overall scope, but I think we really dug into topics that I've had on my mind as of late:

================================================

Topics:

  1. Zachattack - Homie - Itagaki's Legacy

  2. Prkay - Illuminati - Super Metroid Speedrunning

  3. Bobo jr - Illuminati - Timers in RPG Design

  4. Nicholas Reichman - Gentry - Most Concerning Community Trends in Gaming

  5. Robert Jeffery - Gentry - Cabal Shooters

  6. Nathan Grim - Gentry - Rockstar Games

    ================================================

Thank you so much for supporting the channel, I feel very lucky to have the patreon support that I do ❤️

Sincerely,

Mark

Good podcast, broheims! I feel like when it comes to Modern AAA Games, story takes importance and is 'adult' where gameplay is seen as 'kid-ish'.

On the timer thing in turn based games, there are a couple of interesting variations on timers that might have value. One is the Go style timer where you have a big pool that runs out permanently and, usually, three timers for a shorter time that reset each turn with a caveat - when you use one up you never get it back. With the system there's a minimum amount of time you'll always get for a turn while still pushing you to budget that time. I've won many games of Go where the opponent took an early advantage because they used up too much time and ended up making rushed decisions later. The other way is what Crypt of the Necrodancer does where each beat is a turn and you have a game that seems like a fairly traditional roguelike otherwise. It has a rhythm component while giving you a bit more time than you'd get in a realtime game. As an aside on the idea of arcadifying turn based strategy games: I think an under explored idea is implementing a rank system. You could get creative with it too, Fire Emblem for example has weapons that exploit enemy weaknesses, maybe if you have a unit that's absolutely wrecking shop the AI will start to use weapons that are strong against it or maybe they start ignoring that unit and target more vulnerable ones. It feels like a genre with a lot of missed opportunities in general.

Always fun to hear you talk about games.
