Hi Beautiful Patrons!
Today's podcast episode is going to be a fun one! I am joined by friend of the channel, Boghog, to discuss a lot of really cool topics surrounding games as an artform such as creating a refined palate as a player beyond our usual comfort zone (delicacy of taste as Hume calls it). How confining discussion and understanding of game design into strict genre labels will stagnate deeper understanding of that genre's relation to game design principals. The importance of game balance in relation to just stacking mechanics on top of a game's design. How games can more holistically incorporate insane broken elements from glitches and janky games (like Wanted Dead's boss 1 wall glitch, or corrupting save files). How "Fairness" is not a relevant concept for game design and how it prevents deeper difficutly. And how punishing poor play on the player's end with long tedious encounters is harmful to pace, and all other types of fun topics.
I also talk about my understanding that in today's online content creation space, the value of being a Renaissance Man who engages with art on multiple fronts, rather than just type casting oneself as a limited range specialist. And with this thought, how I want to start investing in my long-term career by blending in more game development work to compliment my work as a critic, and how difficult it can be humble oneself into focusing on the basics, rather than over-ambitious ideas outside of one's range of experience in the medium of game development.
The description of the ep sounds kinda stuff, but it's a really fun stream of consciousness that is hopefully as lively as it is pretentious LOL.
Thank you so much again everyone for supporting the channel, like I say in the ep Patreon is the only dignified route for a youtuber with artistic pretentions, and so The Electric Underground simply would not be possible if it wasn't for your support directly.
Sincerely,
Mark
