2025 Success Plan: Artistic Urgency (Patreon Podcast)

Hi everyone!

It's time for the December Patreon Podcast episode! Sorry for the slight delay, was doing the holiday break thang. In today's packed episode, I talk about my love for the show Succession (watched it during the holiday) -- my feelings on some 2024 films, Dune Part 2 and A Complete Unknown, the role of television as the new premiere story telling medium (even though I'd prefer Lit and Film) due to AA economics and my absurd pity for successful artists that seem to have no more remaining talent and feel crushed by the legacy of their previous work, like J.K. Rowling.

I then talk about my feelings of artistic urgency, the difference between being a critic and an influencer, and how funny it is that bohemian musicians (like Bob Dylan) are viewed as artistic heroes of authenticity, while being a broke outspoken Youtuber eating hot dogs at gas stations is just embarrassing in the public's mind.

Also, I explain why crowdfunding, like Patreon, is the only viable economic model for critique as every other economic force in game reviews (insider access, likeability, and steady-smooth-sailing viewership) encourage the Youtuber to be a positive influencer who builds industry connections rather than a Maverick unpredictable reviewer.

I talk a bit about the worst game of 2024 in my experience (see if you can guess it) and my upcoming plans for the channel in 2025 and how I want to do as much meaningful work this year as I can.

Again, thank you so much for supporting the channel, you all are what make my work possible in the first place.

Sincerely,

Mark

In regards to criticism not being wanted and negative not as good as positive, how does Yahtzee Croshaw fit into that?

I know this is super late, but I think you should try a “deep dive analysis” of a very popular game. Like a Skyrim or ocarina of time. In this episode you spoke of the difficulty of maintaining being a game critic being at odds with what is successful (view wise). I think you would be excellent at it. And, frankly, most ‘analytical’ videos people do are very surface level. Your short discussion on dune the book vs dune the movie really highlights your capacity for analytical discussion. People are much more level-headed about analysis videos as well. You don’t run into the stuckman conundrum of needing to love everything. Stories in games are very much still in their infancy compared to film, tv, books. But there’s a huge demand for people diving into it. And I think you’re clearly capable of it. Hope this helps!
