Seeing your vote motivated me to go and play it again and for some reason the new file started with Japanese dialogue. And now I must say this is far superior than playing in English. Yes they talk in combat from time to time and yet I see this as added difficulty to play and read simultaneously. If I miss something no big deal. Besides I’m not a fan of the English dub. It’s ok. It gets the job done but it’s not on par with other Platinum Games. Besides the game is styled as an anime. With all this said, this my third play through, and is connecting with me the most.

Hmm, you do have some valid points. I love the graphics, the explosions, enemy design. I guess for me it‘s a nostalgic thing. I think the music is awesome, by the way.

Going with Angel of Dusk

Interesting, why is it your favorite shmup? I’ve tried it before and I didn’t really get it. The ship have different vertical and horizontal speed, so when you flick the stick diagonally, it doesn’t move the ship 45 degrees. The stage design heavily on enemies on the far side of horizontal panning, which imo is pretty annoying and emphasize memorization too much rather than pattern reading. The scoring system of waiting for the medals to flash puts a lot of attention on the medals instead of the actions, which feels very annoying to me. You could argue the medal routing reward precise routing, but if I’m not wrong, doesn’t miclus spawn based on rng in addition to medals collected? Wouldn’t that throws off the precise routing that the strict medal flashing system is based on? The random movement and color of the item also heavily throws off precise route, making the scoring system that’s already removed from the combat nightmarish to execute reliably. The music is also very lackluster compared to newer gen stuff. I just don’t get why the appeal of this game could override the advantages of newer gen shmups of similar style like psikyo given all these points I’ve listed.

I‘m going for my own nomination, which is Raiden DX. I know it‘s kind of cheap, but it‘s my favorite shmup ever and it doesn‘t get enough coverage 😉

Thank you and I agree about the Wii U era but also I think one also needed the 3DS for the full experience. Like the difference of having a MAC and an iPhone. Or an iPad and an iPhone? They’re married to each other. Mario 3D Land 🤝 Mario 3D World. But I’m going to warn you. It’s because of 101 that I hate Star Fox Zero. Why? Kamiya was vocal about wanting to make a Star Fox game himself. And when you play 101 it will blow your mind at the possibility of what that game could have been. And that is why when they finally showed the reveal trailer with Platinum Games but with Kamiya no where in sight I was like fuck this game. Nintendo could have went full blown Metal Gear Solid but Kamiya Star Fox style but instead we got one of those Miyamoto’s motion control side projects. I believe it was on Gametrailers.com or IGN Nintendo Voice Chat where one of the host said, who was told from an insider, that the old blood was keeping the new blood out. Hey I’m not saying kick the old guys out but what I am saying is play 101 and then imagine KAMIYA STAR FOX!!! Yes it would have cost a lot of money and been delayed and delayed and finally delayed until we have another Panzer Dragoon Saga scenario launching at the extreme end of the system. Okay maybe I’m joking and yet Kojima did want Kamiya to direct Revengence but Inaba told Kojima you guys are just going to end up fighting because it’s not going to come in on time. And with that in mind imagine Kamiya Star Fox on the Switch 💥

Edge of Tomorrow. We need to here about Other Mark, and his opinions. The mark that isnt invested in topics AS much perhaps heheh.

Awesome post my dude! I find the Wii u era of Nintendo especially fascinating, it is the final era of Nintendo being an actual game company I think ha. I'm going to have to do a vid on this era at some point soon. Funny story, I actually own the Wii u version of 101 ha, but I have never played it for some reason. So if I do the review I can play the Wii u version no problem

The Electric Underground

The thing about Wonderful 101 is Nintendo basically sent that game to die. I remember watching Nintendo at E3 and the game wasn’t in the main presentation. It was in the post show. I saw it and said I’m buying a Wii U for this alone but why the hell didn’t Nintendo show it?! Later, as the game was closer to release, Kamiya himself publicly said Nintendo is not promoting it. https://mynintendonews.com/2013/07/05/kamiya-concerned-the-wonderful-101s-marketing-isnt-enough/ By the time it finally released everyone was mad at Nintendo for ditching the hardcore gamer for the casual, no games on the U for months to almost a year… I remember people with stock in Sony, and others, demanding that Nintendo go third party or for Sony to buy them. These voices were loud! This was also the start of voices crying for accessibility and consumption. If I buy something I should be able to beat it and then immediately start playing the next game I bought. And here you have 101 and Kamiya saying “the first play-through is a tutorial.” I think this overall atmosphere is why Gamespot was able to throw Tropical Freeze under the bus while praising the lesser Rayman Legends. Look I know the game has problems. I’ve played it endlessly on the U. It was originally meant to be on the 3DS hence why the locked camera sucks in platforming, etc, without the handhelds 3D effect. But this game is the last balls to the walls, everything and the kitchen sink, Platinum game that was released. Everything after did not have this level of passion or development time. And that’s why The Electric Underground needs to take it for a spin. NOTE: I made sure during the nomination period to write Wii U because the workaround for the duel screens for the remaster are disappointing but honestly what were they going to do.

Ian Chaurero

Same

I'm going with Dead Cells just because I think it's still one of the quintessential roguelike action games, nice enemy to enemy gameplay where you and the enemies can snowball in a fun way, but with flaws a plenty as well. I also wanted Kill Knight just because it was new, and I think it's nice to give a new arcadey game a look on a hardcore arcade channel :)

Mister Mama Mia

Dark Souls, Monkey Ball

Kane Evans

DEVIL'S THIRD SWEEP

Tim French

Denjin Makai II x3 for me (though it was hard to pass over Blazing Star, probably my all-time fav shmup)

vidyer game enjoyer

It would only be right to cover another Natsume remake, so I'm going to vote for Wild guns Reloaded. 😁

The Gaming Hubby

Viewitful Joe is my jam 💯 own the ps2 and GameCube versions but never beat them lol 😆

Some really good nominations. Looking forward to the results and the review.

Trick_DX

Good stuff! I'll keep an eye on the google form to make sure your vote is on the other end of the voting as well. :-)

The Electric Underground

Awesome, that's just what I did!

Tyler Ohlew

Fantastic!

The Electric Underground

no problem at all! So you would write: "Tyler Ohlew, Gentry, Viewtiful Joe x3". Also if a Gentry or Illuminati just write one game name, I auto count that as using all their votes on the game.

The Electric Underground

Oh that's interesting! I think the google form version is working well so far, but in the next few months I might come up with some kind of more sophisticated way the voting works. I kinda wanna see how adding the gentry tier into the mix plays out first though. I might try using the patreon built in voting system next month, we'll see!

The Electric Underground

Astral Chain x2

Michael

Yeah it's great! I love how active the patreon is becoming :-)

The Electric Underground

Just for clarification, I have three votes, do I submit three forms, or just write "Viewtiful Joe - 3 votes" on one form? Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Tyler Ohlew

In the future, use this site --- https://rankedchoices.com/

Jay McCarthy

Damn that's a lot of nominations this month, good sign for the Patreon I guess :)
