TOPIC ZONE | Topic Submission (Homie Post)

Hello Delightful Homies of the Underground,

Welcome to the first topic submission post for the Patreon Exclusive series, TOPIC ZONE, where I give my thoughts on topics and games you'd like to hear me discuss in a more freeform fashion. Each patreon tier will get its own post for you all to submit your topics too. TOPIC ZONE isn't voting based like the patreon voted review. Instead, the submissions are selected based on a random lottery system and each tier gets its own number of slots. The Gentry get 3 topic slots, the Illuminati get 2, and the Homies get 1 for a grand total of 6 topics I will cover each ep :-) So go ahead and post your topic submission right into the comments of this post and I will record the ep on 11/18/24 :-)

Thank you so much for supporting the channel!

Sincerely,

Mark

Selected :-)

The Electric Underground

Beserk is my fav manga and I'd love an opportunity to discuss why I love it so much, so be sure to submit the topic again next month!

The Electric Underground

Oh that is a fascinating discussion! Yeah be sure to submit it again because I do think there is a specific naturally born skill that lends to being good at shmups and a lot of gaming, and it's not just pure reflexes or IQ, so there's a fun little teaser for you ha. Be sure to submit the topic again!

The Electric Underground

Awesome, yes it was selected :-)

The Electric Underground

What I great topic!! I'd love to discuss that in a future topic zone for sure.

The Electric Underground

That's a fun topic! I'd have to really think about it! I feel like the answer is somehow obvious but I'm overlooking it ha. I do love Ketsui and choppers a lot though, stuff with choppers and motorcycles always stand out to me visually (I still want a proper motorbike bullet hell)

The Electric Underground

What a great topic!! Yes I need to remember to put the entropy idea back into my list of video topics to cover, also be sure to submit this suggestion again for the coming topic zones!

I hope I’m not too late, but I would like you to list of your favorite Mecha themed games including Shmups or any genre. I’m on a Mecha Trip right now lmao and would like to hear your thoughts.

I'd like to know your thoughts on speed running as a whole. What it takes to get going, what prerequisites there are to beginning, whether you should begin all by yourself or soak up as much online videos as possible on a given game. For example is it worth trying to copy advanced techniques early on, as they're known time-savers, or is it better to leave those until you've pretty much mastered the standard way of playing? Can you set out to speed run a game you've barely played before? I find speed running fascinating as it's a form of "high score", of perfecting a play, but the goal is different in many cases to a standard play.

+1 to Ryan on a rougelite topic, although I'd prefer a consideration for how they're an evolution of the arcade format (as in, adaption for the sake of survival) as they have an arcade-like structure but encased in randomisation and meta-progression to simultaneously increase perceived value, replayability and challenge flexibility. Personally, much like the term "arcade", I see them more as a format than a genre.

I really liked your idea of entropy in games when you briefly mentioned it. I think you're really onto something here. If you're still working on a full-fledged video about it, just consider this comment a reminder and don't put it in the lottery. If not - would love to hear your thoughts in the topic zone.

Whether or not inherent/genetic gaming skill exists and what does that look like. For example, a shmup player who is new and with less practice, performs better. Prometheus seems to think there’s no such thing and it’s only the quality of practice that matters so id be interested to hear your thoughts. Also, players from Asia seem to be better. Maybe that’s genetic, culture or both.

Favorite manga?

The popularity of Roguelikes/roguelites in current indie scene. I feel like some have a lot of great arcade game design and use procedural generation to make replayability /mastery less about level memorization and more about game sense. But now meta progression is so huge in the genre ( hades style leveling up and unlocking stuff in between runs) that it’s a lot more rare.
