Today's episode I think is an interesting one because I had such a great time in Chicago and I do go over my trip a bit and meeting everyone and having fun at the Galloping Ghost Arcade. But upon my return home I've been filled with a really powerful restlessness and sense of purpose where I have now fully shifted into being a full time youtuber in my mind and so am finding myself extremely frustrated trapped in my office during the day when I have so many projects and things I need to work on and get down. I also talk about my relating to working actors (so the poor ones) when they talk about their journeys and having to do "survival jobs" in interviews and so forth. I can see what they mean by there being a difference between the type of people who are "cut out" for a creative career lifestyle and those who are not and it having nothing to do with talent or being special or anything. Over these past few weeks I have come to realize I have been working "survival" jobs for the past decade without admitting it to myself, which is a really interesting but freeing revelation.

For the near future that feeling will actually intensify for me (i can feel it increasing) because the last thing I want is to try for my dream, fail, then be forced back into the office against my will ha. Even if I have a part time job though i ll never return to a cooperate office job, i ll legit do something else like stacking boxes or working customer service. Especially since these jobs pay the same these days lol

Its funny we are in reversed positions career wise but we all have our individual journeys with this kind of stuff :-) don't worry i m going to work as hard as I can to avoid the stuckman route, where he s afraid to say anything of substance. I do think I have a really healthy space i ve carved for myself and I plan on remaining true to that vision, even as a full time youtuber. Actually I think with the bandwidth of full time i ll be able to not only reach more general people, but then also have content that gets super nitty gritty too

Definitely please don’t become the video game Stuckman. I hate those kinds of guys, because they believe in nothing, it’s purely cynical. Just lean into your niche that you’ve created for yourself, I see you mentioned all the time on the CAG and shmup reddit; you’ll definitely be able to make it full time since you’ve got a monopoly on this kind of content, and there’s enough of us who yearn for it and will pay for it.

2024-06-12 06:20:13 +0000 UTCBefore you snag the outboard preamp, check if your interface allows switching between line level and mic input. Sometimes it defaults to line level and lowers the signal and so makes the mic sound quiet in some cases. Sometimes it's called "pad" or +4/-10. Look for those settings in the interface software or a physical switch.

2024-06-10 15:58:58 +0000 UTCI relate 100% to your day job situation. Sitting at that desk, the thoughts get borderline existential at times, haha. It's such a stifling environment. The funny thing is my biggest creative drives are in those 'trapped' situations at work. It feels like if I wasn't nailed to my desk, I'd be able to blaze through my ideas. Then when my free time comes, it feels as if the 'moment' has passed and I end up getting less done and I feel less motivated than those moments at work. Personally, I'm in the middle of figuring this all out and trying to hit the balance. But anyways... I sincerely hope going full time is everything you want it to be! I'm looking forward to seeing your output continuing and thanks for your great work so far! 🙏

I talked about it a good bit in the podcast ep "The Clint Eastwood Method" if you want to hear me drone on about it ha. But in summary I am going to employ this two pronged approach where I talk about hardcore content (like shmups and so forth) still but then also talk about more recent releases that do line up with my audience's interests of action games. Also fighting games too. One area I'm especially going to be digging into this year (when there are not more recent releases which are sort of sporadic anyway) is going through PS2 era action games a lot like Gungrave, Shinobi, Ninja Gaiden, and all that fun stuff. I think that lines up really well with my audience too because you guys do really enjoy that stuff too (like God Hand). So that's the plan so far is to talk about the hardcore content of the channel as always, but then pair that with more semi-mainstream/mainstream games like Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden, and new action games. :-) My goal is to bridge both content types as well as I can and so far I have been doing it pretty successfully the past few months. Like Devil Blade (hardcore) into God Hand (semi-mainstream). Stuff like that.

School is such an endless vortex ha, I graduated years ago but I think some part of me is stuck in my highschool homeroom still staring at the wall lol. I'm glad the mic is sounding like an upgrade! I just found out that my pre-amp needs a tiny bit more gain boosting for my fancy mic so I'm going to get a cloud lifter for it as soon as I get paid ha.

2024-06-09 10:21:07 +0000 UTCI remember when leaving my office job at a dotcom (many years ago now) because I wanted to strike it out on my own. I was so restless all I could think about was my personal projects and brainstorm while at "work." On the last day I biked home in the rain. Such a great feeling. The only other time I felt that oppressive weight was when I was a kid in school and just having the sense that this shit never ends. Though that was a much more prolonged torture and one I didn't have an alternative to. As for the new mic (assume its the SM7B). It sounds quite a bit different from the one you used before. It has a much beefier response on the low end and probably because of that it's engaging your preamps a bit more, which also comes across better. Since I tend to listen on my studio monitoring headphones it's a nice upgrade to listen to. It also has a proximity effect so the closer your speak into the more full the bass response. Makes you sound like Barry White. Assuming you have something like a Scarlet 2i2 interface (2 inputs but one is 1/4"?) then you could just get a XLR male to TRS 1/4" male adapter and it will just the same feeding both mics in each input. If so then no need for a new interface.

I was curious though, and I’ve listened to most of this podcast so if you covered it at the very end, I’m sorry. What are you planning on covering when you’re full time? I take it you will continue your expansion beyond shmups. Are you going to review new releases like Rise of the Ronin and Stellar Blade? Whatever it is, I’m sure it’ll be great. Also have Galloping Ghost on my bucket list now!
