I'm Too Big For My Tank! (It's Time to Go Full Time) | Patreon Podcast

HI everyone!

This is a pretty landmark ep of the patreon podcast, at least for me personally, where I discuss my goal to go full-time as a youtuber around September 1st of this year and I end up recapping a lot of surprisingly personal feelings about taking the next step forward in my youtubing/creative career -- this being a pretty huge and uncharacteristic leap of faith on my behalf. But I also talk about how even if I fall flat on my face, I'm in a place now where I'm more willing to try and fail then to miss out on what I think is my moment to grow and go all in :-D

Thank you again everyone who supports the channel, it would be IMPOSSIBLE for me to be where I am now without the patreon support I've had to this point. And if there is a time when supporting the channel really matters, that time is RIGHT NOW ha.

The song around 52:00 was killing me trying to remember it but I think I finally found it, is it Carrion by Fiona Apple?

Demiyan Smirnov

Yo congrats man! I remember subscribing early on 'cause I (foolishly haha) thought "I need a nice SIMPLE project to work on next, I should make a SHMUP, I remember having fun with those as a kid...plus it's just some ships & bullet sprites sliding around the screen, how hard could it be to make one?" and ending up going down the rabbit hole of learning that the genre grew huge since the old days now there's tons of design standards and expected conventions and nuances that make it pretty intimidating to get back into...but your content was a huge help in getting caught up. Your philosophical/design rants about the genre were as useful as the hardcore technical deep-dives into little stuff like menu options that M2 adds to their ports and I've always felt like you have an interesting perspective on game design/analysis in general, not just with SHMUPs. The financial risk is always scary (believe me as an indie dev I can relate lol I just got back into working on my SHMUP again, starting it over from scratch after having to go back to the normie world for the last couple years) but I try to look at these big decisions like "Ok what's the absolute worst possible outcome if this fails, and is that outcome something I could recover from?" You're probably not going to nuke your entire life savings before you either 1) figure out what's going wrong with your plan and course-correct, or 2) abandon ship if it's just clearly not going to work out. And you're not going to do anything that's going to make it impossible to get a normie job in the future. So maybe you lose a year or two of your time and take a not-insignificant financial hit, but you're probably not going to end up in a situation where you can't just get a normie job again and grind your way back up to where you're at now. You have a good work ethic so if you've got the support of your wife/family and can get by living a little light for a bit if you have to, then floor the gas and see what happens while you're still young enough to recover from mistakes lol I try to remind myself that Stan Lee created the Fantastic Four when he was like 40yo, there's always time. The game industry isn't going anywhere and you're helping make sure this genre doesn't die out. It feels like gamers are getting tired of open-world story games and have been embracing some pretty hardcore skill-based action games lately so who knows, maybe some TikTok or YouTube short of a SHMUP will go viral and the genre will get a revival. When I was a kid Zun hadn't even put out his first Toohoos and now look at bullet hells lol My only content advice is dedicate some of your newfound free time to clip some YouTube Shorts of highlights of your vids, Thor from PirateSoftware (a former Blizzard dev gone indie) had his channel blow up at an astronomical pace this year mainly using Shorts cilpped from his livestreams. He took over everyone's feeds in like a month flat lol check his content out for advice on working with the YouTube algo and such, and he gives out a lot of great tips on growing a quality channel fast. Good luck man!

Tsugumo

Oh I have a real whopper of one lol, easily the time I ve embaressed myself the most ha.

The Electric Underground

Yeah I could really vividly imagine the scenario. If the story in the next episode is gonna be anywhere near as good we're in for a treat :)

Steve-Fiction

That is such a great insight mushi! Yes the Gilmore Girls does a great job at bringing the viewer into the mythology the Gilmore family has about itself, which the show also does a great job undercutting in subtle ways. The show is really relatable for me and how my family is ha. The funny part about the Rory character is that she is actually extremely exceptional in one area, like her mother, she is exceptionally attractive, but since the show is told through the eyes of Rory and her mother, that aspect of her character is underplayed from their perspective, but the surrounding characters in the show comment on the beauty of Rory and Lorelai all the time. What's funny is that I was listening to this podcast about gilmore girls and of course the hosts of the podcast were girls, and so they did comment on being confused about why the guys in the show were so passionately in love with Rory. But from a male perspective it's very easy to see why ha.

The Electric Underground

Hey playa! This name looks familiar :-D

The Electric Underground

Thank you so much Galaxia! I hope this patreon will be a good first experience for you :-) I really do appreciate the support.

The Electric Underground

That's so cool to hear billy. This was a fun ep, I am trying to really deliver on the patreon podcast eps as much as I can, espeically now that the patreon show has its own little identity and audience.

The Electric Underground

I definitely won't cuz I will need the little people more than ever lol.

The Electric Underground

Ha exactly! I think i'll share another story of me embarrassing myself on the next patreon ep ha.

The Electric Underground

Oh that's awesome! I read 2666 very recently! It's an amazing novel in some sections, but you can tell he didn't get the chance to finish editing together fully

The Electric Underground

Lol I'm glad I could nail you with my second hand embaressment, I'll have to do another one next episode (I have a good one).

The Electric Underground

Yes I am Draino, it's insane what my schedule looks like right now. It will be such a relief (though kinda scary) when I leave my full time job and start working a full time youtube schedule. Rather than working every evening late into the night to record and edit.

The Electric Underground

Yeah it's pretty surreal that I'm actually going to go for it ha. I'm counting down my days at my regular job like a kid waiting for summer vacation lol.

The Electric Underground

Good luck 8) Rory is an interesting thing to bring up. I didn't really like the revival at all, but her outcome is pretty spot on. Even in the early seasons you could already see she was kind of self-destructive. Granted, kind of the your point, it's understandable due to the pressure of an entire town's expectations and just the reality that she was just a slightly above average student in a small town. Plenty of times you could kind of just see she would do what she thought she was supposed to do, or conditioned to do, not that it was what she necessarily had a passion for. But it's interesting since the show kind of does a decent job of making the viewer see her through a perspective as if you were her parent. Because throughout the show she never does anything particularly astounding, but you're lead to believe she's 'the one'; all her accomplishments are kind of the type that you would be proud of as a parent, but as a random person seeing them you'd probably just go 'meh, that's cool I guess'. Anyway, been quite some time since I watched it to do an actual character analysis haha But since you're a fan of Boy Meets World, we can see how average flunky Cory Matthews becomes Mr Feeny in the revival 8)

Just subscribed to my first Patreon ever. Keep up the good work!

Wow this really was a fantastic podcast. New patron here and I really dig the non gaming talk as much as your gaming critique/analysis videos.

TheSmartestBilly

Congrats, man. I’m happy for your big life shift. Don’t forget the little people 😂

RipTheJacker

Hearing about the quidditch presentation at school brought back my own cringe memories where I did a presentation with a board and screenshots about Earthbound. I definitely can understand the pain of going through that in a small town school.

Viewtifu1

This took me back to my days at uni being obsessed with Roberto Bolano =D

ahlnold

That's really funny about the book club, it both surprises me and doesn't surprise me at all.

Steve-Fiction

Another amazing episode, I loved all the little tangents and stuff. That girl wasn't the only person who went red in the face after hearing the quidditch story though, I was laughing but also cringing hard.

Steve-Fiction

So stoked for you man. You deserve to make a living off your shit. You must be working all the time to put out this much content with a full time job. Good luck!!

Draino

That's awesome that you've made it to a place where you can try doing this full-time. Good luck with the transition and I look forward to seeing what you do in future :)

Ben Bishop

Oh nice she's like the partner Stevie Ray Vaugn never had... I say that mainly because I discovered that legend only a few years back and am a bit obsessed.... Another great singer I've heard recently is Indila from France with Derniere Danse have had that song on repeat a few times lately.

Taze Roiu

Oh cool idea!

Jake G

Yes exactly RC, we are of same minds here. Because I do think ALOT of people, look at stuckman for example, view critique as a stepping stone to a later career in the gaming industry or film industry. Which sadly works ... if you are willing to be an insider critic that appeases publishers. But if you take the role of a critic seriously, which very few do, you can really help to influence how games are designed and made, hopefully for the better. The price that you pay is that no one in the industry likes you ha. What's interesting is that I think if there is a natural extension of being a critic industry wise, it wouldn't be as a developer. It would be as a publisher (you need to spot and foster talent right). So if I ever expanded on from being a critic in the future, I'd really want it to be on the publishing side somehow. But that's fan fiction stuff at this point ha, as you need some SERIOUS money to get that happening.

The Electric Underground

I'm sure that will still happen to some degree my dude, but at least it won't be for EVERY damn video ha (as it is now).

The Electric Underground

Thank you Taze, young Fiona apple is slept on a lot these days. Her early albums are so good.

The Electric Underground

Thank you very much Vrenna!

The Electric Underground

Thank you so much arrow viper! yes the electric underground is attempting to beat the odds in many ways lol. Hopefully it works! At least you all will get a banger of a 2025, I can go full time for that long at least.

The Electric Underground

Thank you so much Jake! And yeah I can imagine trying to sit through a book club these days being really surface level. Thank you for the supportive words, it means a lot. Also a book club gives me an interesting idea for the patreon, which is like a review discussion group or something, where i have a call with the patrons and we discuss interesting game reviews or something.

The Electric Underground

Here's to no longer hearing you pull all nighters to get videos done and slug through the day. Wait wait wait, you recorded gameplay on VHS (me too!!)? I actually got this idea from my older brother who would take it to school and show of his run of salamander he did the night before.

Shazzy

Awesome to hear you feel you've progressed much faster than expected. Personally I relate to a lot of what you were talking about in terms of creativity and spending a lot of time actually searching for the thing you feel you're wanting to put out there. I also respect you for being confident in your artistic integrity as a critic. I hear waaayyy too much that criticism is a starting point and something a lot of people want to move on from - But opinions are interesting! Criticism (if done well) is interesting! So thanks for going to bat for it, especially in regards to Video Games, an industry I feel we're seriously lacking decent criticism in. Looking forward to seeing where you go from here, I've enjoyed all of your work thus far and look forward to it continuing:)

RC

Great taste in music!

Taze Roiu

Good luck :-)

Vrenna

Just commenting on the title (gonna listen later), but this made me so happy. The reason I became a Patreon was because I was afraid you would someday stop making videos. So you being able to go full time is so cool and I honestly never thought that was a possibility for a shmup channel. Keep the good work coming!

ArrowViper

Producers was 60s. "Look at me now- I'm wearing a cardboard belt!" I relate to the no one fucking reads sentiment. No one even reads beyond surface plot in the book club I joined trying to find someone to talk about books with. Sorry, with whom to discuss literature. (Read Ada Palmer.) Wishing you success and commend your bold decision making, way to really live life! A family man as well, it's inspiring ha. Can't wait to see where the channel(s?) goes with the full time switch, your stuff is fantastic already.

Jake G

I laughed at "Fat of the Land people"! Of course, you're referring to The Prodigy. Best wishes on moving to full time! Hopefully it means you'll be able to not be up half the night every night and burn the candle at both ends. There's an element of that which I suspect might still shine through, given your artistic inclinations, but hopefully you'll do well enough to be able to find a balance.

Josh Dieckmann

I haven't heard about this professor before, but after you comment I looked him up and am watching a vid of him discussing the Gettysburg address, which is really interesting so far :-)

The Electric Underground

Oh that s really cool! It sounds like your bioshock presentation worked out pretty well :-) I could see it beint influenced by atlas shrugged for sure. Though i m vaguely aware of the themes of both ha. Also yes I really like fiona s first 3 albums especially. They have a great vibe that s uniquely artistic and commercial at the same time

The Electric Underground

Your quidditch story reminded me of how I too used a book report to talk about a game. In my case it was Bioshock linked to Atlas Shrugged. My teenage understanding of the subject was cringeworthy, but the whole situation wasn't too bad. At least I wasn't alone. Shortly thereafter my mate made a powerpoint about Berserk. P.S. didn't expect to hear Fiona Apple, I am a fan too. P.P.S. And good luck with your endeavor!

tatsudon

A lot of the stuff you talk about make me think about the lectures from Larry McEnerney about effective writing in school vs the real life.

emonk

That is extremely kind riff and I genuinely appreciate all the support you have given me up to this point ❤

The Electric Underground

Damn, I knew it'd happen at some point. I'm so glad to see it though you're absolutely crushing it, best videogame channel on youtube for sure no contest, congrats dude!

RiffMason

For sure mate. You are an artist and I understood that the biggest leap an artist can make is to working on it full time. Even if you are scraping by, living a bit hand to mouth for a while. This is the biggest jump you will make. While maybe later in an artists career more money can be involved and so it seems like more is on the line, this right now is the most important leap. If you can make this, steer this, just perceiver and get though this, you can get through the rest

Louis Zezeran

Can only talk for myself, but i'm hyped af for hearing more Mark opinionated opinions.

francisco

I'm hoping it's exciting news to the patrons and my audience generally. Though this is one of those things that probably effects me personally much more than my audience, until i start uploading more vids and so forth as a result. I am gonna expand the patreon a lot as well.

The Electric Underground

Thank you very much my dude!!! I bet you can relate being a traveling comedian and everything.

The Electric Underground

Congrats man, it's great thing to hear.

francisco

You are doing great, a support you in the leap mate
