THE ESPORTS DREAM IS DEAD! PATREON VIDEOCAST!

Hi everyone, this month's electric after dark is a special video cast where I talk about the end of the grassroots esports era for fighting games and arcade games as well as other topics like the end of e3 and the silent death of AA game studios.

Thank you so much for supporting the channel!

Sincerely,

Mark

Crazy how on the nose the commentary about Nintendo and Melee was in this episode considering what's happening now

Aha I knew there as a deep Ubi Soft connection. So the thing is that even though Sloclap doesn't have a supportive relationship with Ubisoft anymore, the company still has I bet a lot of game journalist contacts. Like if I worked at a big bank, had a bunch of contacts while at that big bank, and then broke off to make my own bank, those contacts would still be shaded by my big bank credentials. And I think with sloclap something like that is clearly happening. The game's press has been out of control positive (even being nominated as a fighting game for the game awards lol), so I think there is some kind of industry connections going on with it. Whereas look at wanted dead, that game clearly has no friends in the industry, and the industry has been pretty critical towards team ninja historically.

About Sloclap, it was founded by former Ubisoft employees. Their first title, Absolver, was actually a direct competitor of Ubisoft's new baby: For Honor. They originally wanted to support Absolver for years but For Honor clearly won the war between these 2 so that's what started Sifu. With 6 other small companies, they have founded Kepler Interactive, so they're completely independant to Ubisoft. Pierre de Margerie, Sloclap founder, is an absolute fan of martial arts and I think that's what made him and a few of his colleagues leave Ubisoft, in order to work on the projects they had in their heads, like Absolver and Sifu, games that better represent Kung-Fu.
