SPAIN QUEST COMPLETE! Recapping My Trip to Cave Mikado Event in Spain

In today's exclusive Electric After Dark episode I recap my experience traveling to Spain for the CAVE Mikado event and what it was like prepping for the documentary, prepping a crazy converter for Jaimers to use, Getting over my fear of airplanes, Trying to feed my Coke Zero on ice addiction in Europe, meeting players IRL, and so much more!

Yeah I did feel like a wiring rat when i was chewing open the wires lol, I think I was partly inspired by rats to be honest, as they used to get into my dads truck and chew the wiring and he'd have to constantly rewire stuff (he worked on farms). So I have two sons and no they did not come along this time around, as that would have been insane to manage ha. So what was really nice for me is that my wife's mother (so my mother in law) came over and stayed at our place with our kids, so they had a pretty cool time too. I'll take my kids on an international trip when they are teenagers or something ha, def not at this stage (six and four years old). My four year old really wants to go see dune part 2 with me in the theater, and I'm debating whether or not I should take him lol

The Electric Underground

yeah ha you know it really didn't bother me at first. For the first bit there in the direct aftermath I was like, oh crazy but makes a cool story. But as time went on the anxiety started to spread like a slow release poison or something. Yeah exposure therapy really is the best way to face it, even if it is really scary at first.

The Electric Underground

Ha yeah my coke zero addiction is my one vice pretty much, as any other vices would take me down at this stage lol. I once was extremely the purist athletic type, as in I went 4 years or so literally following the strictest athletic diet possible. But in the past two years I've been trying to eat less so my brilliant plan was to be like a model from the 90's and just drink diet coke and eat popcorn lol. Well that didn't pan out as far as drastically reducing my food intake, but I did gain a pretty strong coke zero addiction ha. I know I'll need to lay off and cut back in the coming years, but right now I just don't want to (I sound like a smoker ha)

The Electric Underground

Dang man, that's crazy about your bike crash with this semi-truck! I have a similar experience... I hit a regular passenger truck on a bike when I was ~20-years-old when they turned right and put themselves in directly in front of me, forcing me to collide with them. Somehow they ran over my left hand and crushed it up a bit, breaking some of the cartilage complex there, but it healed fine. It gave me a bunch of anxiety, too, but time and facing those fears helped me get over it. This wire harness setup story was amazing... 😆 You're like some kind of engineer rat! Gnaw gnaw gnaw lmao I've never left the US, but your story with wanting to just go to a gas station for some Coke Zero had me cracking up! That's just American af! I'm excited to see what kind of experience I have when I eventually get out of the country. And similarly, it will probably be where the wife would like to go. 😆 Did you bring your kiddos, and how was that? I have a 9 month old and it sounds like quite the challenge to bring her on such a long flight (with the air pressure on her ears and all). But we don't have any family nearby so that may be mandatory...

Hi my dude! Yes I had a great time in Spain, it was such a fun trip. So yes once I got into Barcelona I had a much easier time getting my Coke Zero fix ha, I found a Burger King near my hotel that I would go get sodas from lol. I think normally it wouldn't have been so much on my mind, but I was like massively jetlagged so I need my caffine/soda fix bad XD. Also I forgot to mention it on the ep but man there was a KFC in Barcelona that was just delicious. Unironically my fav thing I ate when I was there was the chicken sandwich at KFC, that chicken was seriously good!

The Electric Underground

I'm glad you have good memories of your trip to my country! Now I havent been to the US but the coke zero story you mention is kinda weird. Here in Madrid we drink coke zero all the time, not sure how you couldn't get one. Maybe because you were in the event which was located literally nowhere. Perhaps 4 hour from Madrid is not too much for you, but for Europe that is huge. In center Europe you can cross 4 countries in 4 hours XD

colorboy

I'm glad you enjoyed the episode my dude! yeah honestly I think my really negative reaction to the xanax was a good thing in the long run, since even in my troubled state I felt like it was hurting, rather than helping. Because I could see how easily one could get hooked on that stuff if you kept taking it. That converter mod is probably my proudest moment as a madlad modder lol

The Electric Underground

oh yeah it's cool to know that jaimers likes the m30 so much! I'm thinking of even doing a video on the channel where i mod it and install an og saturn d pad on it, since I still think the og has a bit of a better feel to it, but the m30 has great buttons though

The Electric Underground

Dude, this was a great episode. That story about you jumping over the truck was freaking unreal. I can’t even imagine. I’ve had some experience with anxiety medication too, and holy shit that stuff can be dangerous. I’m glad that you got off of it before it got a handle on you. That’s also incredible that you actually pulled off the M30 connection, given how stressful that whole thing sounded. Like seriously lol. Stoked to see the documentary!

DJ420PraiseIT

I'm glad that your trip to Spain went so well! Still in the middle of listening, but I wanted to mention that it's interesting to hear that Jamers plays on an M30 pad. Before I discovered the LS-32 stick, the M30 D-Pad was BY FAR the best option that I had found for playing shmups. I can't comment on the Saturn controller, but I think that the "thumb rolling" aspect of the M30 is done far better than the other D-Pads that I've tried (xbox 360, original Genesis, miscellaneous fight pads). That said, the 2nd M30 I bought is super stiff; but maybe I just need to break it in more.

DJ420PraiseIT

That would be awesome my dude! Yeah I would love to have my fix prepared ha, like a true diva! so I know NZ is far away from everything, but maybe you would be able to come to a meet up in the UK at some point! that's my next international destination I think

The Electric Underground

Hi my dude! So shmup slam 7 will be august of this year in Boise if you want to come visit! Retro Game expo would be cool but I'm not a collector and I bet getting floor space there would cost soo much money ha! It would be cool to maybe go to some arcades in CA though? I could that being a great meet up location, or galloping ghost in IL

The Electric Underground

Very interesting stories. Funny you mentioned no infinite Coke fountain anywhere except Burger King - it's the same here too, probably same as the rest of the world except the US I imagine. If you ever had any reason to come to NZ (certainly no shmups to be found here) I would have to set you up with a chilly-bin (cooler) full of ice and Coke Zero :)

Ben Bishop

Looking forward to seeing more from the event! Sounds like it was a crazy time. I was moving during the last IRL shmup slam but if it happens again it'd be fun to drive over. Maybe Portland Retro Game Expo could be another good meetup option since so many people go to that already?

Viewtifu1

Hey if you do a UK journey at some point in the future it should definitely be much easier, in addition to the taxis being less mental the train strike dispute has finally been settled now so the UK is no longer a travelling nightmare either which I'm so happy about

RiffMason

I don't know why the accident bothered you so much. You clearly have Spidey-sense, and are nigh invincible. You should be going through life _daring_ trucks to hit you. On a more serious note, it sounds like you handled it the right way. Exposure therapy is the most effective treatment there is, if you're in a place to face the source of anxiety.

Philip Mason

That was quite a story about the truck. Kinda started to sweat a bit just hearing it! But that's good that you push yourself. It can be damn hard to push past mental barriers, but in most cases it's important to build resilience. All to easy to just curl up and be a shrimp. Not sure what was more shocking, that story or learning the depths of your Coke Zero addiction. I kind of pinned you as ultra disciplined athlete type. I'm sure you still have that in you and you go full beast mode. I've gone in and out of phase myself. I'm either full-on obsessive single-minded maniac mode, or pretty much lazy and careless. Which is actually a topic I've thought about talking about on my otherwise dormant YouTube channel. The connection between forming discipline as a general ruleset, being physically active, challenging your mind, etc and how that carries into shmups. Although I think you've touched on it a bit already. Anyways caffeine obviously isn't that bad on the scale of vices, and I don't drink much of it anyways but I also know I'm kind of using a cheat code that I didn't even need when I was more athletic. Speaking of cheat codes, I found a type of weed that's basically pure CBD. For me it's basically just a subtle calm and none of the other stuff that goes along with THC.I actually got sensitive to THC so I didn't even want to touch weed for a long time but this stuff is basically like the yin to my coffee's yang. I have it every now and again, usually in the morning, and I can just go about my business, workout, etc. It's called "Mango Haze" because of course it has to have a wacky name. Not sure if pot shops are legal where you are.

NeonDaggerGames

Maybe I'll put together a little compilation of patreon podcast eps at some point, that could be cool ha!

The Electric Underground

To be fair I think this should be put on YouTube. Just because this doesn’t happen often. Everyone probably wants to hear about this.

J4k3 Ry4n

Glad you had a good time! It was a really cool experience meeting other players in person and then seeing the cabs in person as well! I'm really glad you made the journey because it was cool meeting you and talking to you in person! I hope if I end up doing the UK meet em up in the future you are able to make it to that one as well!! At least we won't have to battle taxis too much ha

The Electric Underground

Hey cheers for the shout out! Just wanted to say before I get to the fun stuff that that was a such a crazy thing you went through with the truck, really glad to hear that you seem to have been able to recover from that experience as well as you have. Regarding the event itself though yeah I had a blast it was well worth it! It was great to meet you since your channel is such a big reason for why shmups are such a part of my life, my first 1cc was crimzon clover novice which I discovered through your channel and I've been really all in on shmups ever since that haha. Death smiles was also the first Cave shmup I ever played (which I also discovered through your channel) and finally getting the 1cc on it at this event on the actual arcade machine itself was such a wicked way for it to happen ha. Meeting people like Jaimers and M.Knight too was great as well and watching them play was pretty jaw dropping stuff really, also he might not be about round these parts but shout outs to the guy who absolutely annihilated me on street fighter 3 with Bradley haha. Honestly, there's loads I could say about the trip but I think instead I'm just going to say I've got my fingers crossed for a part two on this one. Oh and p.s. glad that all your efforts with the controller paid off in the end!
