Electric After Dark - All My Influences are Dead.

In today's exclusive patreon podcast, I reminisce on the influences from podcasting and youtube that helped shape The Electric Underground and realize that pretty much all of them are no longer active i.e. dead.

Electric After Dark - All My Influences are Dead.

Oh that's right!!! Thanks for the correction ha, yes that sounds right :-)

The Electric Underground

I know I'm super late for this lol but small correction, it's actually "The Book of 5 Rings" by Myamoto Musashi. I'ts a fantastic book, filled with depth!

Oh yeah that is such an interesting concept Tango, where in many ways it often plays out that artists who are in their deepest states of suffering (often self inflicted these days), are able to produce their strongest material, even if the personal cost is very high. Another example of this that's a bit less dramatic, but still clear, is the album After Laughter by Paramore. After Laughter is my fav album of all time (more people should check it out seriously, it's amazing), and this was recorded at a period where Hayley Williams was within a very tough personal low and it is captured so beautifully in not only the music and performances, but also the lyrics too. The lyrics are all about feeling washed up and lost in your 30s and I can def understand that feeling ha.

The Electric Underground

Your commentary on being drenched in one’s vices and being at the absolute pinnacle of their craft rings very true with most of my favorite Seattle Sound bands. Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley were at the absolute top of their game during the height of their opiate abuse.

Ah and ofc, I was a fan of ATP Live too lol. And idk if the origin of Bobby "Mike Ross" Scar was when he went on Excellent Adventures, but they both worked at twitch at the time. But those are the good ole days lol. Hell I used to relisten to Gootecks' Family Fun Arcade podcasts with interviews with Pyrolee, Jimmy J Tran (Emphy at the time iirc) and Justin Wong. I feel like I just dove into fgc history when I found myself as a noob πŸ˜‚

Oh I really liked the episode too! lol Also nothing wrong with being a diva sometimes! πŸ˜‚ I think every broadcaster has it in them by virtue of necessity. My dad was a broadcaster, and yes he is a total diva lmfao

Sarah

Glad you enjoy the tunes!!

The Electric Underground

American Football is too perfect for this ep πŸ‘Œ

Sarah

Great point Jacob! Yeah so many artists of the past would not survive the social media moral scrutiny that we apply today. Picasso was a wild boy for example ha.

The Electric Underground

For rizzle, I have two sons :-)

Hey, joined this month. Been watching your stuff for at least a year, my fav kind of video is the 1cc commentary. You've helped me clear Crimzon Clover, DOJ WL, Ketsui, working on Guwange, thanks! Good talk! Interesting stuff on separating art from artist. The line seems to be entirely personal and always case by case. Like I do not feel like listening to the new Arcade Fire record since allegations came out, but I sure as hell am not gonna stop blasting Ziggy Stardust in my living room even though Bowie did the same shit 50 years ago. How many of our heroes from back in the day would have their reputations intact if instagram existed since the 70s?

You are a dad? Figuratively or for real?

Oh absolutely, I went through the ringer with it as well after getting hit by a truck while biking. I was in a state of continual anxiety for about two years before it finally dissipated for the most part.

The Electric Underground

for sure!

The Electric Underground

Yes ha, I threw up from nervousness before I spoke to jaimers on the first podcast ep lol

The Electric Underground

thanks for tuning in my friend!

The Electric Underground

That seems to be a trend among many talented artists. It is interesting how a person's personality and irl actions sometimes mismatches the nature of their art. There are lots of really squeaky clean personalities that irl are transgressive, then there are a lot of artists who create transgressive are that irl are stable and rather mundane ha.

The Electric Underground

absolutely, there are also a lot of upright moral people who have also been great artists as well. I think there is a lot of aspects of human nature at play in art that confound our understanding of human nature.

The Electric Underground

That's awesome to hear colorboy!!! Thank you for supporting the channel! I'm glad my style of video making is connecting with you and stands out from the mass of youtube content ha

The Electric Underground

Oh that's really cool! I look forward to seeing more episodes of the show!!

The Electric Underground

I get that but for me there's just too much circumstantial evidence to really not think something messed up was going on with the guy. What exactly he did and to what extent we may never know (or maybe we will in a few decades) but there were definitely a lot of creepy impulses going on. He had a lot of child seeking behavior that as a father these days I find disturbing.

The Electric Underground

I believe an artist fundamentally has to harbor something crude and volatile, often that something is repulsive. I think it’s important to try to make nuanced distinctions while resisting dichotomies so that we can all know ourselves better.

Climby_coyote

Separating the art from the artist has been a struggle for hundreds of years. I would like to believe that just as many great artists have been terrible people as there have been truly good people though - not sure there is correlation there (would not be surprised if there had been studies performed about this.)

You gotta chill out on MJ. Not one time has that man been proven guilty. https://youtu.be/ifduhO8B2FM

Ya I was one of those that joined this month. I already told you why, I found quality insights in your videos and wanted to support. Ultimately, your deep insight is what would hook me to the channel and patreon going forward, which perhaps is not what will attract a huge audience? some youtube channels want to be interesting to everyone and that kills them - once you do the same as everyone, then anyone can find that content everywhere else. So in summary! keep it going this way!

colorboy

Just an FYI STG weekly is back, guest submission forms are opened and they just did an episode this week. Great news as they are such a great resource

Chinopolis

Shout out to Aris. I’m sure I didn’t spell his name right but prior to starting medication a year ago I had crippling anxiety. That shit is REAL!

J4k3 Ry4n

Let’s be real. A one cc is more impressive than shooting a 3 pointer πŸ˜…

J4k3 Ry4n

I totally get what you said about feeling like you are speaking to a celebrity. It’s weird. I wouldn’t give a damn about meeting or talking to Lebron James for example but Jaimers or yourself ?! An honor πŸ˜‚
