Yeah the multi-game slots will be something that I'll need to think about what I want to do with for next slam for sure!

The Electric Underground

Great shmup slam again!well done mark, only two things I think is 1,the post run interviews with player and commentators is awsome and is the perfect time kill to get the next run ready and the the other thing is having multiple runs of the same game I think those slots could be used for other games(even though they were still awesome)and personly the donations are donations it’s up to you what you do with it and no one should care about it!people donate to help support!

On camera post run interviews would be really cool! I'll keep that in mind for next year to see which players would want to do that and which players would not. It's a really cool idea though!

The Electric Underground

New Patreon here! What I like most about slam is the runs with good commentary. I have played a lot of shmups but I still haven’t played half of the ones that are played in the event. So when looking at a run of a game that’s new to me the gameplay isn’t enough to entertain unfortunately. Commentary makes it more fun. So I would love to see even better and commentary and also post run interviews, maybe on camera?

ArrowViper

I'm really glad to hear that Martin! :-)

The Electric Underground

The correct way to listen to the show!!!

The Electric Underground

You got the job :-) The persistence has impressed me! So for shmup kumite 2 it'll probably be in November or so, it should be a nice warm up for slam 5!

The Electric Underground

Great ramblings, as always I enjoyed it! And congrats to SS4, you created something really unique here. And I think your thoughts on money are spot on!

started listening at 3:30 in the morning, perfect after dark hours. :) i've just been back to grinding commissions post-slam. the event was a lot of fun as per usual, and i had a great time both playing and commentating -- even if i didn't get the 1cc! i've been enjoying doing little bits of shmup commentary lately and it seems like other folks appreciate it too. great episode as per usual, it was chill to listen to while i got work done. for me personally, when it comes to helping out events and stuff -- i've got a lot of history with event organizing, and it's a lot of stressful and annoying work, but for me, the payoff is always in seeing people talk about their good times, develop cool memories, and foster new friendships, and the inevitable closeness that is formed in communities by them. frankly, even with all that stressful work, i tend to fall more in love with events the more involved i get, which is why you can count on me if you need another hand on deck. although, i'm sure you know this already, because i keep reminding you... ;P keep it up; a lot of people appreciate what you do, and i think the content you make does a lot more to grow the scene than many people realize!

Since I'm on vacation atm I did a crazy thing and went for a walk (actually two with yesterday) while listening and of course I went after dark ;-) (midnight). Shmup Slam 4 went really well and I had a lot of fun watching. Keep on Slamming.

Rowlf015

Yes I'm really happy with how the event went as well and I'm glad you were able to enjoy it all weekend. I'm not totally sure but that's definitely something I want to look into next time to ease the money paws of youtube ha.

The Electric Underground

Yes thank you so much for donating! helped ease the burn of the damn tlb loss ha. I personally would love to see alternate western shmup events as well, then I could just enter them have fun and maybe even do some commentary without having to run the stream and schedule and all that ha.

The Electric Underground

lowkey using the same title as last slam's podcast episode. Nice Glad to have been part of Slam this time, I think all of us had a great experience and learned a lot from running the event. Even though the viewer counts didn't explode I still felt like there was a much bigger community who were actively chatting during the stream. I might have contributed to the finnicky money problem by donating some bucks equal to the number of hits I took in ZR but I personally have no qualms with the donations going to support your channel. But of course, I'm a patron so it should be pretty obvious that that's my opinion. Great points about setting a precedent as well, that's especially true when it comes to a smaller community like that of shmups that's starting to slowly crawl back from the dead; we don't want to inactively discourage all the smaller shmup showcases like the recent Hispanic one. I'd still love to see other Western events that aren't Slam. Either way, I'm excited to continue participating next time!

Was listening to this after work to relax. For me Slam 4 was the best way to experience the great community and a lot of new games in an amazing 2 day package. To hear how it all started was really interesting and I think the event should just stay as it is direction wise. With that I mean: One persons vision and the community having fun together through the event. Thank you for making this possible Mark and also thanks to all the people I got the chance to watch playing, all the helpers and all the nice people I chatted with. I'm pretty sure most of them are Patreons :) This slam also gave me StellaVanity, a game i had never heard of and that I'm now playing exclusively since days. If it was not for the event and GalactaRay I would never found this game. One question regarding donations during the Slams: Is there any way to give them next time without YouTube getting a cut?

Radokat

Yes exactly Chinopolis I think that's exactly how I view the event. I do view shmup slam as an asset to the shmup community that players can take advantage of and that I do what to do my best to do justice to the players that participate, but I don't view it as a creation of the shmup community itself. I think talking about the history of the event really puts this into perspective where I literally forced this thing into existence by chasing players down and begging them to be part of the event in the beginning ha. Throughout the history of the event I have needed to make a lot of strategic decisions about how the event will look and come together that actually rubbed against the grain of what was the common idea of how a "shmup community event" would look. And even on just a branding level I do view slam as very closely connected with the electric underground brand, and so I feel a really deep responsibility to oversee it very carefully and ensure that the buck stops with me so to say ha.

The Electric Underground

The new players being introduced is one of the things that sticks out to me the most. Not just the runners but the audience too. Having the wide range of skill levels really opened a lot of peoples eyes and brought people out of their shells. This is huge IMO. Also it introduces some legitimacy for those outside the genre. This is probably the first time I showed anything shmup related to non-dirct family members and they all thought it was really cool. I think while Shmup Slam is a community spotlight, it's not a "Community" event. To me it's "The Electric Underground presents Shmup Slam." I think what happens is that people lose sight of the fact that while people are helping out and showing off (of their own free will), it's still your brainchild. A true community run event would need to start from the community as a community and would be something completely different. It caught me off guard that there were questions about the money, but I guess it's not surprising. If it was a "true community" thing and money started pouring in then yeah there's some issues to work out, but as is, I think most people were just glad to see you get some a bit of compensation for your work. This is a something we all look forward to and enjoy and hope to see more of in the years to come.

Chinopolis

but it is a cool jazz track ;-)

The Electric Underground

Punk'd by that song at the start. I was wondering what this cool jazz track was... and then the vocals started.
