I’m mowing the lawn. Just became a house owner so I’m looking forward to having a dedicated gaming space.

ArrowViper

I'm actually really glad to hear that!! I enjoy people listening back to the older eps pretty much under any circumstance :-)

The Electric Underground

I'm late because I'm listening to these podcasts retroactively. You'll like what I'm doing though because I'm playing Ketsui.

legless

awesome!

The Electric Underground

I am listening while working from home.

John Adams

Luckily I got headphones but no it ain't that strict just too many people were playing too much on they're phone.

Rowlf015

Oh boy that sounds strict. I hope my podcast can count ;-) If not maybe I'll have to sing an episode or something ha.

The Electric Underground

Oh yes for sure! STG weekly was an inspiration for me as well!

The Electric Underground

I hope it helps move monday along!

The Electric Underground

ha that's great

The Electric Underground

Yes! I'm making an announcement of this soon, but the patreons will be able to test out the stages as I make them :-)

The Electric Underground

props to you ha! My speed on the laundry is laughable, I tend to try and do the dishes instead.

The Electric Underground

Awesome! I really hope we see a m2 rtype collection soon, get some leo out there :-)

The Electric Underground

Yo this comment inspires me a lot. That's right!!! The reason why making negative reviews is important is because if we let people pump up mediocre as the best of the genre, newcomers will spend a bunch of money on them, feel like they had a lame time, and then drop the genre. This comment did help me remember this perspective!

The Electric Underground

Nothing better ha!

The Electric Underground

Great to know! Yes I get the feeling some Gradius videos are coming soon :-)

The Electric Underground

Listening at work as allways, btw. use of phones is forbidden exept for listening of 'music' ;-)

Rowlf015

Game reviews are always gonna cause hassle, people have emotional, historical connections, personaly reviews ain’t my thing I think it would be cool to do guides like stg weekly, some of there videos are 7-8-9 years old and definitely worth revisiting

Dean Campbell

It's Monday morning, I'm working from home and listening to this while coding :)

Pronouncing shmups: I read a comment recently on YouTube that said "I love shutm games Giga Wing. Battle Garig. Dodonpashi" which made them sound like tasty Indian dishes. Also, shut em up is a brilliant typo.

100hundred

Also, super curious about that shmup you're working on! Any chance on getting a little sneak preview?

100hundred

Currently improving my laundry folding speedrunning strategy 🧦

After finishing this episode, I just wanted to chime in and agree with this comment because it echoes my thoughts regarding the content your creating, Mark. Keep forging forward with what you’re doing and try not to take too much umbrage with the negativity you’re bound to attract in the YouTube comments on your videos from time to time. What you’re doing for the genre/comment is important and we all appreciate it!

Playing some R-type Final 2, which is the second game I purchased of the series after R-Type 3. I played the other R-type series elsewhere, but on arcade cabinets or hacked consoles. Simply relaxing down after a work week on software engineering.

Having finished listening: Giving your honest, unpopular opinions on games is totally worth it. I would hate for there to be a day when an exciting new shmup comes out and I can't hear the real views of people like you, Mudprints and Shmup Junkie. I don't care too much if I agree with them. People who take get so hurt by other people's honest feelings on games and movies that they need to lash out and try and enforce conformity are emotionally immature. I don't take anybody's word as gospel (I'll play R-Type Final 2 for myself eventually), but I absolutely am excited to hear your opinions as a passionate shmup player and a major figure in the community. Like you said, you're at a point where you're somewhat protected from getting dogpiled for having a unpopular opinion because you've got a positive fanbase active in your comments. Use that power for good and keep giving the best, realest reviews that you can.

I'm coding my shmup while I listen. I usually binge-listen/watch while I code/cook/shower lol Whatever anyone's gripes are, you're dead-on calling the lazy art out. It looks like a PS2 game or Mighty No 9. It seems almost insulting if you're an R-Type fan...I'm not big into the series but I think most people's nostalgic memories were of badass creepy H.R. Giger inspired art. They couldn't take 5 min to type "HR Giger 3d art" into Google and get some inspiration or even buy a cheap 3d art pack to throw together?: http://bulletproofoutlaws.com/junk/art-type.png I think honest reviews are important because a casual shmup fan who remembers enjoying them as a kid but doesn't play them much, who gets psyched up hearing a franchise they remember from their childhood has a new game coming out and all they see are positive reviews so they go drop $60 on it but have a weak/mediocre or flat out shitty experience may just drop the whole genre altogether...whereas they could've heard you say "listen this isn't going to be worth the money, but check out XYZ similar but much better shmup, you're gonna have way more fun with that" and had a way better experience with the genre and end up sticking around. It seems like the shmup audience is either super casual or super hardcore, and the casuals are probably looking for more lenient reviews where if you had even a 2 min summary at the start of a review that just gets right to: "Is it an instant buy like Sonic Mania, the FFVII remake, or Wonder Boy? If it's not then are there enough flaws that I shouldn't spend my money on it even as a casual fan looking to scratch a nostalgia itch for a couple weeks who won't notice input lag etc? And if it's bad enough that I shouldn't buy it, the news of it still gave me a shmup itch I want to scratch so as an informed reviewer is there an alternative game you recommend I SHOULD check out or buy instead to scratch this itch while I'm here and you can potentially hook me on the genre while I'm feeling curious?" And then the rest of the review could be aimed at the more hardcore group going into the technical details with a more critical eye because you DO have good critiques and you explain your reasoning well, like the undefined bullet forms, no laser warnings, unexpected randomization etc are all valid points (and covered in literally the basic shmup design tips for gamedevs post on system11 that they should have easily found & read) and that stuff DOES make a difference to more serious players making the decision to buy or not...plus I'm sure a lot of casuals would stick around to see your reasoning. It just seems like the two audiences come to a review looking for almost completely opposite information, so it might help to sort of tailor a little summary from a casual gamer perspective and then get into the deeper stuff. And the fact they're looking up a review means they're in the mood for SOME kind of shmup so if this one won't be a great experience then a well informed shmup fan recommendeding them an alternative that'll toss a log on that little flame of interest could bring in new fans to the genre that stick around. Just some early morning thoughts! Back to coding my game so I'm not still working on it when I'm 85 years old like all these original IREM R-Type devs that worked on this apparently are lol

Tsugumo

I'm sending memes and art I find on the internet to people while listening to the podcast.

Kikoman589

Like Joe, I'm listening while cooking breakfast for the fam. Also, I second the idea of covering more classic shmups. One of the things I like about your stuff is that you seem to follow an authentic approach to the genre that is based off of your tastes, experience, and knowledge about the community, rather than a lot of general shmup-ish content. I like that general stuff, too, but I appreciate your "voice" in your work. Anyway, with that said, I'm a middle-aged dude who grew up in arcades and loved NES Gradius and Zanac as my intro to the genre, so I always appreciate thinking and learning about older games. I love tracing their influences and evolution. Bringing more of that to your vids and podcasts or whatever would be welcome!

Chris Jozefowicz

Taking a lazy day today so sitting at the computer with a coffee and wondering what game to play next. I'm eyeing up Axiom Verge. Slowly getting in gear to go for a run later. Always a pleasure to hear you talk and rant about shmups :)

72pct_Water

Groovymame was out of reach for me at the moment. Retroarch was EASY. If when you set it up, definitely check out arcade osd. It's a gui that let's you edit resolutions & geometry(pc side). It's standalone from the driver but usually used with it. *

Robert St.Angelo

Definitely I can see that for sure. And I blame a lot of this issue on the misleading marketing and press coverage of the project, because it does make people think r type is coming back when really the core dev staff for the series is long gone and this new team is just the B team that put together R type final 1, which Jaimers says is clearly the worst in the series. It's like the Dragon Ball Super team saying their going to bring back Dragon Ball Z. It just isn't going to happen in the way people are hoping.

The Electric Underground

Yes I agree 100% on this. Reviews these days typically function as a marketing wing of gaming, this is something that even I recognize. So this is another reason why I think putting out a negative review for something like Final 2 is so controversial for certain people, because it's basically expected that the review will be in line with the marketing (and kickstarter is marketing, just wait for that video) and when my review undercuts that, now I'm just a jerk ha. Oh i know don't you hate reviews like that in the past where they could get away with saying something is too hard. I think that happened to NG2 to some degree as well, you know that type of review is a sign of the end of quality coverage ha.

The Electric Underground

Oh yes for sure, I am going to do a dedicated groovymame setup and review in the future, it'll be a good one!

The Electric Underground

OH YOU WILL GET IT HA. I have some fun with it at the end of the ep :-)

The Electric Underground

Your service to humanity has been noted and will be remembered forever ha! :-D

The Electric Underground

Oh that's fun! I heard the PSP version of Dissidia is much better then the ps4 version or the later versions that came out. Can't go wrong with the vita!

The Electric Underground

Im playing around with my crtemudriver set up. If you've tried it, I'd like to hear how it compares to the mister. You had a great unbiased review on it, and emus get a lot of hate. This set up feels, REAL, mannnn.

Robert St.Angelo

Playing some WARZONE YEAH while trying to wake up and waiting for the rant about the R-type review lol I personally find reviews to be an outdated concept. If i want to know how a game is I'll just look at raw gameplay and make that decision for myself. I wonder that reviews are only for those that need to justify they're purchase or whatever after the fact. But I've been biased against reviews ever since Game Informer gave Fire Emblem or something a 4 out of 10 because it was too hard.

Chinopolis

Cooking breakfast for the fam while I’m listening today. Expecting some spicy ranting after your R-Type review!

Joe Torre

On your question about a possible disconnect to the audience: I think a lot of people are very excited about just the fact that there's new R-Type game. Like, are the 80s back?? What's next, will The Smiths get back together, will there be Back to the Future 4?!? And then you come along, and you don't really give off the vibe that you waited hand-wringingly for this, more like a luke warm "really, who ever needed this?" welcome. I think there might be the disconnect, the passion level of reviewer and some of the audience. Think about what kind of video you'd do if a new DDP came out and the devs botched it, I'd think your vid would be something else completely :-).

Martin Wöhrle

Here you go, I listen while cleaning the f*cking toilets for the ungrateful family 😃✊

Martin Wöhrle

i'm mostly just chillin, getting ready for bed after a day of playing a bunch of Strikers! i should be getting some work done but instead i'm listening to the podcast and playing Dissidia on my Vita :P
